1993 Mercedes-Benz 300TE Wagon
1993 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series Base Wagon 4-Door Description
1993 Mercedes 300TE, The Mercedes W124 line is considered by many to be one of best cars of all time, the last of the "hand built" Mercedes.
This being said there were a few known issues with these cars.
First the wiring harness was biodegradable and would cause all sorts of issues as the insulation began to disintegrate.
Secondly the transmissions were known to have issues with reverse going out.
I love old wagons and found this at a wholesale auction a couple years ago, it appeared to only need paint (the clear coat was pretty much gone on much of the car) but other than that it looked very nice and only had 75,000 miles, unheard of for an older Mercedes 300TE!
After receiving the car and simply driving it off the car hauler I realized the reverse in the transmission was gone so I had the transmission rebuilt for $1,800
After driving the car for a few hundred miles I realized all the other known issues for these cars (plus the paint) had not been addressed on this car, most likely the reason it was at the wholesale auction, the car required more work than it was worth.
Already being in the car for too much money after rebuilding the transmission I couldn't let it go thinking it might end up in a salvage yard so I bit the bullet and had everything repaired.
Here is what was done.
New Transmission
Updated wiring harness
New A/C system
New Paint
New Tires
New Mass Air Flow Sensor
These are the main things, the serpentine belt, tensioner, pulley and hoses have been replaced as well.
I have $6,000 in receipts for the car, if you would like to see them I am happy to send a copy.
The interior is also in fantastic shape, the MB-Tex (vinyl) is perfect, the carpets are clean with no wear spots, overall a very nice interior.
The paint is not perfect, it is a high quality base/clear coat system but not every ding was removed due to cost so there are some minor imperfections, most people may not even notice but I have to point it out.
It is however shiny and very presentable and should hold up for years to come.
These engines are know to go several hundred thousand miles, this one only has 76,000 miles and all the major service work has been done so it should have years of trouble free life in it!
If you have never driven one of these they are an amazing ride, extremely comfortable and smooth on the highway, it just floats down the road.
The doors sound like a bank vault when closing, everything on this car is tight and precise, you can tell the quality and workmanship that went in to these cars.
The interior is cavernous, plenty of room plus the third row seat is so cool!
Speaking of cool, check out the factory phone that is still in the center console!
Obviously it doesn't work but it just too cool to take out!
The drivers seat has air adjustable lumbar support!
Both the driver and passenger seats are power, even the headrest.
The steering wheel is electrically adjustable (telescopic) another really fun feature!
This car was the epitome of luxury in the early 90's, called the "Estate" wagon as this is the car owners would leave at their Estate and drive on weekends or use for hauling while there.
These are getting harder to find, some are extremely expensive and if they don't have any proof that the wiring, transmission etc have been repaired then you can pretty much count on having to do so.
There are some that are quite a bit cheaper but you can bet there are issues such as high mileage, rust, mechanical issues, etc
This is not a perfect car but it is a very nice car that shouldn't need anything done to it for a long time!
It is priced very reasonably considering all the work that has been done to it,
They don't make cars like this anymore, so much personality, I love it but unfortunately I have too much money in it to keep it.
If you are looking for a great car that will last far longer than anything you can buy new for a fraction of the cost this is for you!
