1969 MERCEDES 280 SL
This is a 1969 Mercedes 280 SL with 4 speed manual transmission. It has both hard and soft tops. Included are the official Mercedes Service Manual, Haynes Owners Workshop Manual, and an overhead rack to lift and store the hard top, suspended from the ceiling of your garage while you tour “topless.”
Color is blue (#304 G), and the soft top is black.
I purchased this car in 1980, and the odometer had just turned past 100,000 miles. In 1997, I had the engine completely rebuilt at about 126,000 miles. Current odometer reading is about 132,000 miles, so there are only about 6,000 miles on the rebuilt engine, which runs well.
At about 127,000 miles, the fuel pump was replaced as well as the front axle mounts, front center link, tie rods and steering shock. All flexible brake lines were also replaced.
In 2015, I had the power steering pump replaced, new leather seat covers over new foam, and the heater/vent levers replaced.
The clock and the trip odometer both stop and start arbitrarily. The radio sometimes makes a crackling sound as the volume is adjusted. There is a small dent in the right-rear bumper above the exhaust pipes. There are some paint chips along the edge of the hood and some scratches on the glass of the left-side window. The chrome plating is peeling off the steering wheel horn ring and the dashboard wood trim is deteriorated at the ends.
This car has always been great fun to drive, and is a real “head turner.” It receives compliments everywhere I go, but now I must make room for a Tesla Model S.
