I have owned this 500E for the past 14 years. It has 160K accident-free miles on it, has been rock solid ...and still drives exactly the same, as on the day I bought it. Solid & tight, all the way around.
It has been religiously maintained at one of the top local Mercedes Shops, ‘Mercedes Centrum’ in Bellevue, since I bought it in 2002.
It has always received Mobil-1 oil changes, every 3000 miles …and full transmission service, every 30K miles. Coolant & brake fluids have also been flushed, every 24 mths.
About 20K miles ago, the timing chain, tensioner & rails have been replaced. At that point, all factory plastic camshaft oiler tubes were replaced with Rauch & Spiegel aluminum oiler tubes. Most vacuum lines were replaced during that job, as well. This was purely preventive, as the car ran perfectly at that time.
A recent compression test showed all cylinders within proper range.
I also upgraded to a 1994 Euro transmission valve-body, a few years back - which allows the car to start in 1st gear, now. The US-models always started in 2nd gear (except during kick-down) - for EPA reasons, I was told. That left you basically with a 3-speed transmission. It was a great upgrade and transformed the way the car feels off-the-line.
Rear sub-frame mounts/bushings have also been replaced w/new ones, about 10K miles ago …as well as the self-leveling rear hydraulic shock has been replaced.
Other than that …it only needed routine maintenance. This car never once broke down on me or left me stranded.
The car is in beautiful condition …and still gets lots of looks.
After I purchased the car, 14 yrs. ago, I discarded the factory 8-hole MB wheels …as they simply didn’t look great on that wide-body W124 Benz.
I got my hands on a beautiful (pricy) set of 18” forged Kleemann wheels. Kleeman is a high-end MB tuner, out of Denmark. Powder-coated to match the dark grey cladding on the body. 255’s in front & 285’s in the back, all still in great condition.
I also have 2 brand new (pricy) Toyo Proxes T1-S rear tires (285/40/18) for those wheels, which I will include.
A couple of years later, I also bought a set of expensive, multi-piece silver 19” Antera Type-321 wheels, which I ended-up swapping w/the grey Kleemann wheels in the summer vs. winter time. The Antera wheels w/tires (275’s & 255’s) are also included in the sale. Each set gives the car a different look.
Both wheel & tire packages cost me close to $8K, alone.
I also upgraded to Euro glass headlights …and recently replaced the fog lights in the front spoiler w/new ones, as they were looking a bit weathered.
I have also upgraded the brakes to the bigger MB 600SL brakes …with cross-drilled rotors, as well as adjustable Koni Shocks in front. A common upgrade made to the 500E’s. New brake lines were installed at that time, as well.
Another change I made, was to upgrade the somewhat underwhelming stock rear muffler, to a stainless twin-exhaust one. It was a custom job by one of the top local fabricator shops. It did not make it loud …just a touch more sonorous. Still less than any of today’s AMG-model.
On the interior, I recently replaced a sagging headliner with a high-end charcoal Acantara headliner. The A-columns were also covered in Acantara, at that time. Installed by a premier auto-upholstry shop in Seattle. Not cheap.
The walnut & leather sports steering wheel, I ordered from Germany – when I bought the car. It cost almost $1K.
The sound system was upgraded w/a DIN-Alpine Media Player, digital to analog converter, HD-radio w/Bluetooth & ADS 6-chanel amp (discreetly mounted in the trunk). All factory speakers were replaced with quality, high-end units.
It also has an alarm system, with remote entry/door locks …as well a remote start function.
Power sunroof, power rear sunshade …power windows, power factory-Recaro seats - all work perfectly. The seat heaters do not work. It was never an issue for me, hence I never trouble-shooted it.
A/C works great, as I just had the fan motor & regulator replaced, as the fan motor became a bit noisy.
The paint & body are still in absolutely beautiful condition. Some minor nicks here & there …but for a 23 yr. old car …still stunning.
The car was never hot-rodded and was always pampered. I’m in my mid-50’s and like to take care of my stuff. All upgrades & changes were made with ‘taste’ in mind.
Car has new tabs, good until 7/2017.
