1967 Mercury Cougar Description

For sale: Rare 1967 Dan Gurney Special Cougar big block S code Marauder 390 325hp, factory A/C, honest and correct original survivor. Sold new and lived a pampered life in sunny California. Documented with Marti Report, window sticker, previous CA title and CA registration showing the black plates are original to this car - even the original selling dealer plate frame is still present! Correct original equipment under hood including original buck tag. I purchased this big block muscle Cougar several years ago from the 2nd owner, who had it stored with his large collection in an underground parking garage in Beverly Hills - this is the kind of survivor car comes along once in a lifetime. I also have a large collection of vintage and cars and trucks, but since I'm not Jay Leno, I have to sell one occasionally. This is one of those times. I'll do my best to describe it below:
Exterior: 98 percent original paint, still shines well. Good driver quality, great for Cars-and-Coffee or casual weekend shows. Would need repaint for serious concours duty. Many small dings from 49 years of use, they don't show in pics well, but there are several door dings on both sides and several dents in hood. Front bumper is bent on passenger side. Only appreciable rust on the car was a small area at bottom of rear window corner from water puddling there. I had that professionally repaired with new metal and the paint blended on the panel between the trunk and rear window. There is minor surface rust on inside lip of trunk lid, and on trunk floor. You could spray Metal Ready inhibitor on those spots if you were concerned - I wasn't concerned in the dry high desert climate I live in. Also small blemishes on leading edge of hood, behind passenger drip rail, and a couple near windshield molding that appear as discolored spots, again don't show in auction pics, see close up photos in below Photobucket link. Cars are only original once, and the car is nice enough that it should be left as is. Original tinted glass in good condition, Magnum wheels were new 3 years ago. There is some minor pitting on chrome moldings, nothing horrible. Great looking car overall that gets compliments and thumbs up wherever I go in it.
Interior: Original save for repair to driver seat bottom, and in very good condition. Really clean and nice. Car was stored inside, and it shows. Original steering wheel, carpets, door panels, dash all very good. Small tear in driver arm rest, and headliner has a few splits at seams and will need to be replaced at some point. I think everything works on the car, right down to the horn, radio, and shift indicator light. A/C blows but not ice cold, needs recharge, I didn't fool with it as A/C is not needed here in Montana. Really a nice clean car that's ready to enjoy as is or take to the next level.
Mechanical: Starts, runs and drives out great. Sounds very healthy and barks the tires at will. Correct 1967 part numbers and date codes where they should be. All the original CA smog equipment is in place and functioning. The Beverly Hills owner I purchased from was a super rich fellow and I was only able to speak to his handlers and staff. According to the staffer I worked with, the original engine and trans were rebuilt, new Flowmaster exhaust installed, and most front suspension components, brakes, brake booster, and new fuel tank and sender were installed during his ownership. He was supposed to forward the receipts for that work to me, but they never came. I took the car to a pro mechanic here locally to have the C70F carb rebuilt, and he thinks those updates were made, as the motor pulls strong and runs great with no smoke or noises and the C6 trans has a shift kit and will bark the tires into 2nd gear. For some unknown reason, the heads were painted cast color instead of corporate Ford blue when the engine was reassembled. I had the car completely serviced and checked over, and I've driven it a few thousand miles on Cruise Nights and to several shows and it has performed beautifully. There is a very minor driveline vibration cold after storage that goes away when it's warmed up. I also had the West Coast Classic Cougar solid state upgrade done on the rear tail light sequencers and a new premium USA made turn signal switch installed. Original parts are included. As far as I can tell, everything works great except A/C not blowing cold and headlight vacuum cans leak. I've been simply opening and closing the headlight doors by hand. Car doesn't heat, but will get warm if you idle in traffic or in a parade long enough on a hot day. Really a nice tight driver with no appreciable squeaks or rattles.
Price/Misc: I looked for comps out there, and found cars in this condition bringing $15k and up. My reserve is much lower than that for quick sale. If you're tired of looking at $40k - $50k 67-68 390 Mustangs, and other fluffed-up Ebay rust buckets, give this honest survivor muscle car some serious consideration. There won't be many like it coming up for sale, that's for certain. See more pics here, I will be adding underside pics when I get the car to a lift (copy and paste) http://s261.photobucket.com/user/burgundyamx/library/Cougar?sort=3&page=1
You are welcome and encouraged to personally inspect the truckprior to bidding.I'm not a dealer, I don't do this for a living, I'm an enthusiast. If you'd like any detailed photos of a specific area of the truck, just ask! I have many photos of it but will be glad to take more if needed. Please ask any questions you like before bidding. You will be answered quickly and honestly.Transport isreadily availableandprobably cheaper than fixingmajorroton a Midwest or East Coast tetanus car. While the car runs great, it's probably not a good plan to fly in and drive it home since it's an old car, and stuff happens. Cell service is poor in Montana and it's a long way between towns. Montana title isclear with no liens, in my name. After the sale, I can store the car for up to 30 days free, after that $100 per month storage will be due. Buyer needs to get insurance as soon as car is paid for as I will cancel mine at that time.
