“Cougar is named after the most magnificent cat in North America. Because the animal tells you something about the machine, one of a kind. It’s like a sports car, but better. Like a luxury car, but better. The best of both.” (1971 Cougar XR-7 ad) In 1971 total Mercury Cougar production numbers amounted to 62,864 vehicles. Only 1,717 of the 62,864 manufactured would earn XR-7 convertible status. Of the 1,717 that became XR-7 convertibles, ONLY 22 were produced with this paint code (Black, Ford #1724-A) and trim package. Offered here is a fine example of a rare Cougar XR7 convertible. This vehicle has one quality repaint in original Ford color and the original red carpet was replaced with black. Otherwise, besides a few parts she’s needed through the years, she’s original, right down to the perfectly fitted power black convertible top with glass backlite which easily buttons right into place. Step on the gas and enjoy the power and nice, low rumble of the 351-2V Cleveland V8. You’ll ride on comfortable Hi back bucket seats with your hands gripping the rim blow tilt steering wheel. Concealed windshield wipers, really cool sequential turn signals; a long, low, wide, road gripping stance make this one pleasurable drive. Heads will turn, questions will be asked and you’ll be living an experience. (Buy this vehicle and the original XR7 wheel covers, rims and white wall tires will be included.) This XR7 has been outfitted with brand new BF Goodrich Radial TA’s 245/70/15 tires and brand new Magnum 500’s. This is such an easy and fun drive. Truly my favorite! This one will pain me to let go…you better buy it before I change my mind.
