1968 Mercury Cougar
Same owner for 39 years.
The complete interior was done when restored. The seats, carpets, dash top and headliner were replaced. The glass is clear and nice. The soft rubber had been renewed. The gauges work well. The interior lights, dash lights, wipers, brake lights, folding headlights work. The sequential tail lights are unique. The original radio does not work. Just installed are electric head light door openers that are more reliable than the factory system.
The motor starts and runs well. The 302 has been tastefully modified, see complete description by the owner. The automatic performs well. The suspension has been modified to handle better. It has power steering and brakes. It has tremendous power.
The paint is very nice with very straight panels. Great color. The chrome bumpers are like new. The floor pans were replaced during restoration. Generally, still clean undercarriage.
Here is a statement from the owner:
I have owned this Cougar since 1980, restored it in 1992 and used it as an occasional driver, mostlystored since that time with 32,000 miles since the drive train was rebuild and restoration. Listed below aremodifications and upgrades that may not necessarily be apparent. Car was originally purchased inCanada.
Engine, 302-4V “J”-Code:
1970 engine block, original 302-4V heads.Bored .030 oversize, Moly piston rings, balanced assembly, ARP rod bolts, Cam Dynamics 260 durationstreet camshaft driven by a roller timing chain.Heads have mild port and bowl smoothing, AIR injection bosses removed, hardened exhaust valve seats(allows for use of unleaded gas without eroding seats), bronze valve guides and Competition Cams rollertipped rocker arms installed.
Ford Duraspark II distributor and ignition module installed. 12V sourced from ignition key “Run”position and not from ignition coil. Distributor advance curve optimized for engine configuration.
Holley direct replacement carburetor installed.Carburetor has electric choke mechanism fed by 12V sourced from same“Run” bus as ignition and switched through a dual purpose oil pressure switch so that choke onlyreceives power when there is positive oil pressure. Oil pressure warning light triggered from samesending unit.
Steering, Suspension and Brakes:
All ball joints and tie rods recently replaced with premium quality “Moog” USA made components.Global West Negative Roll upper control arms installed and alignment specifications included. All steering components rebuilt by Roger Rode of Rode’s Restoration in Gallion, OH. All components areoriginal “Bendix” and stamped as such. Do not replace them with anything aftermarket, or let thesecores out of your sight as they are very difficult to source!! They can be rebuilt, very unlikely that thatwould be necessary, but be careful who does that. Steering box has been rebuilt by Rode as well. Hosesare all recently new as well with the 1969 routing for the pressure hose.
Factory front disc brakes, rebuilt original proportioning valve and stainless steel brake lines throughout.
Booster assembly correct Midland unit for this application and sourced locally in Portland (BoosterDewey). Do not replace with more common Bendix power brake booster unit (there should be no needto anyway).
Body
All sheet metal on the undercarriage is completely rust free, as all rust damage was cut out andreplaced with heavier aftermarket 19 gauge sheet metal. Floor pans, torque boxes, inner rear fenderaprons, trunk floor pans fabricated and replaced. Under body painted with blackRustoleum for rust protection.
Very nice Cougar that is a stunning example.
