1973 MIDGET with Datsun 1500 motor & 5 Speed O/D Rivergate Project MG
1973 MG Midget Description
1973 Midget with a 1981 Datsun 1500, 10 engine (not a B-210), esirable Five Speed Over-Drive Transmission, nd a box full of receipts. The Motor has the rings and bearings replaced, he Head was rebuilt and machined flat. The Transmission works flawlessly, he Shifter is smooth and positive. I bought the Midget with 28,000 on the chassis as a basket case in a man's garage. I wanted the 1275 for my Supercharged Bugeye project, ut then had a very solid Midget Roller to deal with. I knew of Rivergate and I have a friend who collects Datsuns. He had a Motor and Trans he got from a nice 210 that had been sideswiped making the driver side doors unusable. I bought the pieces needed from Rivergate and made the conversion. While it was apart, painted the car inside and out. The Differential has new bearings and seals, nstalled at the local Jag Dealership. The Body was exceptionally straight and rust free, ut the right front fender has been bumped It can be repaired and the filler on it is cracked. The Chrome is average, ice, ut with very close examination, he bumpers have tiny specks. The wheels are 7 inch GM wheels and the tires have less than 3,000 miles on them. The original seats are in it, nd the cushions are good, ut they would need to be recovered. They currently have a quality set of covers on them. The Doors open and shut nicely, he windows work smoothly. The Radio works and with the 5 Speed, ne can actually hear it while rolling down the Interstate. Speaking of Interstate, he car gets great mileage. The Top Boot is excellent, ut the car needs a new top. It was a garage queen, o it never got a new top, nd now that I am selling it, t is better for the new owner to decide on color and make. The top itself goes up and down well, its tightly. Temperature and Oil Gauges work, ut the Speedometer needs a converter to go from Japanese to English. Rivergate sells them. The Tachometer cuts in a out for some reason. I've messed with it, ut not had much luck. Now for the bad history: The electric fan lost its connection and the car overheated. I fixed that and it ran great, ut then started smoking. That's when it got the new rings and bearings. Then it wanted to overheat again. Had the head milled for flatness and rebuilt. It still wanted to over heat. Put in a new radiator and that fixed it... for a while. I pulled the head again and the machine shop thought it was the OEM head gasket, o I put it back together with the best head gasket on the market. I put it all back together and felt so discouraged, didn't want to work on it any more. It has been setting for 3 years so now the gas in the tank stinks, ut I haven't pumped any of it through the system. Price is FOB, ut I will help in any way I can to ship this rig and am flexible as to pick up date. (license plates come due in January, aid for by the new owner). Payment is due no later than 10 days after sale. I have a dolly and will haul it as far as 200 miles from 57701, ut will have to rent a uhaul pickup to pull it. I have used Uship with good results, ut have found I don't prefer brokers.
The bad: The rear quarters have rust issues down low. Rockers have rust. The ignition switch needs to be replaced, airly easy on this, Chevy type column. The seat needs work on the driver's side. The speedometer cable is broken.
