1983 Oldsmobile Hurst Cutlass Calais Description

1983 Oldsmobile Hurst Cutlass Calais / 67k orig miles / 100 pics / never in winter / garage kept / survivor You are viewing one of my favorite cars in my collection; a very nice example of a well kept, well equipped & documented 83 Hurst/Olds. It has just under 67,000 original miles (also documented on the title). This is a fine example of 1980’s sportiness especially with the “Hurst” package (only 3,001 made), which included many factory add-on features such as limited slip 3:73 rear axle, adjustable rear air shocks, heavy duty suspension and quick-ratio steering, higher stall torque converter, dual snorkel air cleaner, roller rockers, aluminum intake, dual outlet exhaust---all factory equipped. For those familiar with the late 70’s through mid 80’s performance cars---there were not many choices if you were looking for performance. This is not a muscle car but it would definitely run with the best from this era. The exterior is striking and gets many compliments—with the black and contrasting silver bottom, including stripe package and spoiler, as well as T Tops. It has numerous options, such as the velour interior, factory floor mats, cruise control, cold A/C, driver and passenger manual recliners, rear defrost, power windows/locks, 3 speed wipers with intermittent control, limited slip differential, and the very smooth 5.0 307 Olds High-Output V-8 with 4 speed automatic transmission with overdrive, via the infamous Hurst “Lightning Rod” Shifters. I have several documents since new, including factory manuals, several work invoices, including the original dealer-applied undercoating invoice. The title documents the mileage as “actual”. This documentation traces back to the original owner. I purchased the car from the original owner’s grandson 2 years ago. I hate to sell this car but I have too many and need to make some room. Exterior: The paint is mostly original and is very presentable as-is, but with flaws. The top surfaces of the car have some checking which is common on these cars (this was known to happen even when only a few years old!). The paint still retains a nice shine but the aforementioned checking does not show up in the pictures. If you are looking for show quality then consider a repaint on the top surfaces (hood, roof, trunk). The spoiler has some significant cracks associated with the fiberglass, and again, is not noticeable until you get up close. The hood “bulge” also has some minor cracking on the edges, again not noticeable in the pictures but one can readily see in person. There are some other age and weather-related blemishes to the paint, mainly on the top surfaces. The sides are in very good shape. There are some touch ups here and there for stone chips and other scratches. There is a very slight indentation behind the driver’s door but is almost unnoticeable….I suppose a paintless dent removal process would eliminate it. Otherwise the body panels are straight, no significant dings, dents, or scratches to speak of…and does not appear to have had any paint work or bondo repair to my knowledge, except I did have the black portion of the driver’s side door repainted, as a result of a chemical that got on the surface and streaked the paint. I had this door professionally repainted, even down to matching the original factory “orange peel” effect so as to blend it as best as possible. Most people could never tell the door was repainted. Bumper fillers are original and still in good condition. The wheels are nice and free of pitting; however the factory-applied clear coat on the rims is starting to check/peel in spots on some of the rims. Overall exterior is very well preserved and reflects the garage-kept history of the car. It is in “survivor condition” which means it is not perfect, but nonetheless presentable and original. Interior : The interior is very nice. No evidence of any smoke smell but there is a small burn hole on the passenger seat in an area that is not readily noticeable. Carpets are clean and free of wear, as factory floor mats have protected the carpets since new. No significant fading, stains, rips, tears, cracks or other holes to speak of. Vinyl dash and door panel armrests are like new…no cracks. Headliner does not sag. The interior is very nice and comfortable….like stepping back in time when you sit behind the wheel. All the power equipment works, except the cassette player. Also, these are known for factory gauge problems, so the electronic oil pressure and coolant temperature gauges have been bypassed in favor of mechanical gauges below the dash for accurate readings. The other gauges in the dash work fine, including the idiot lights. A/C was recently serviced using R12 freon and blows cold. Heater works but must be manually adjusted directly at the heater door behind glove box; the cable from the dash lever does not engage the heater door for some reason. Underneath: The undercarriage is almost unbelievable considering this car is from the Northeast. Obviously you can see from the pictures it probably never saw salt / winter weather. It is like new underneath. If someone wanted to detail the undercarriage, they could probably show the car with mirrors underneath with a bit of effort. Mechanical: It is apparent from the prior owner it was very well cared for. I bought the car from the grandson of the original owner 2 years ago as part of my “revolving collection” and have since performed the following: - Fresh fluids, including the following: o rear end limited slip fluid o coolant flush, including thermostat o oil/filter - New belts - Recharged A/C (still retains R12 original-type freon) - New cruise control module - Re-packed front wheel bearings - Replaced fuel filter - Thermostat - Reset timing - Replaced Throttle position sensor - Safety inspection (without windshield sticker) I would not hesitate to drive this car anywhere. The tires hold the road well and are smooth at highway speeds. The Olds HO 307 coupled with the Turbo-Hydramatic 200-4r transmission power this car very well. Both the engine and transmission are smooth and drive like new. No significant leaks to speak of, if any. Steering is tight and brakes are smooth. A/C still blows cold and retains the old R-12 freon. Overall: If you are looking for a great example of the last of the traditional “G-body” cars, this one’s for you. The car is beautiful and ready to be driven and shown. This car is so nice, that most people selling on eBay might say the car is “perfect” or “flawless”. The average person may describe it as such-- but for a car collector, there’s never anything 100% perfect unless it was restored. As such, this car was never restored and has almost 67,000 miles and has some trivial flaws. I have sold numerous cars on eBay and in all situations I had positive feedback. If you get the winning bid and are not completely satisfied upon your physical inspection (prior to purchase), you can walk away from the vehicle, less $75 of your deposit (to pay for the cost of having to relist on eBay). Please note that my bank currently has possession of the title. I have my own funds to pay this off, so once the buyer gives me the $250 deposit I will pay off the balance and have a title within approximately 2 weeks. After which I would expect the buyer to pay me in full.
