1979 Citroën 2CV 6
Seldom-seen French classic in fantastic condition 602cc, air-cooled flat two-cylinder engine (M28) Four-speed manual transmission Correct Espandon Gray exterior with a black, canvas roll-back roof and gray interior Functional Flip-up front side windows Functional canvas roll-back roof Later production 2CVLooking for a classic yet simple European economy car that is not a VW Beetle? Or, to put it another way, are you interested in owning a car similar to what Roger Moore and Carole Bouquet used in the James Bond film, “For Your Eyes Only?” MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this super cute 1979 Citroën 2CV 6.
Finished in correct Espandon Gris (Gray), the car’s paint and trim are in overall great condition, however the grille is still in original condition. The car’s windows are clear and intact and please note that on both front side windows, the bottom sections flip up. The remaining windows are fixed. The car’s lights are clear and intact while the headlights are adjustable. This handsome 2CV was a recent recipient of a correct cosmetic restoration and looks stunning on the open road!
The car’s bodywork is straight and the correct paint work has been recently done. The car’s entire black, canvas roll-back roof looks great. It can be opened halfway so only the front seats catch full sun, or it can be fully rolled back so anyone in the back seat can catch some rays as well. The engine bay is quite tidy and still contains the original paint, the battery appears new and the cargo area is clean, includes a full-size spare tire, a jack, and is in great shape. The car’s bumpers look great and fit tightly to the body.
Under the hood is a 602cc horizontally opposed, air-cooled two-cylinder engine (M28) with a single Solex 26/35 carburetor mated to a four-speed manual transmission. This Gallic four-seater rolls on Firestone F-560 radials, size 135R15, at all four corners. One thing Citroën is known for is a plush ride, and the 2CV was no different. One of the car’s design requirements was that the customer should be able to drive eggs across a freshly-plowed field without breaking them.
Inside, the gray front bucket and rear bench seats with their crosshatch patterned upholstery, are in excellent condition. There’re floor mats instead of carpeting, the two-spoke factory steering wheels looks good, while the inner door liners are in satisfactory shape and the instrument panel is in very good order. There is no radio in this car.
Conceived by Citroën Vice-President Pierre Boulanger to help motorize the large number of farmers still using horses and carts in 1930s France, the 2CV has a combination of innovative engineering and utilitarian, straightforward metal bodywork — initially corrugated for added strength without added weight. The 2CV featured low cost; simplicity of overall maintenance; an easily serviced air-cooled engine (originally offering 9 horsepower); low fuel consumption; and an extremely long-travel suspension offering a soft ride and light off-road capability. Often called “an umbrella on wheels,” the fixed-profile convertible bodywork featured a full-width, canvas, roll-back sunroof, which accommodated oversized loads and until 1955 reached almost to the car’s rear bumper. Notably, Michelin introduced and first commercialized the radial tire with the introduction of the 2CV.
Manufactured in France between 1948 and 1988, more than 3.8 million 2CVs were produced. A 1953 technical review in Autocar described “the extraordinary ingenuity of this design, which is undoubtedly the most original since the Model T Ford.” In 2011, The Globe and Mail called it a “car like no other.” Motoring writer L. J. K. Setright described the 2CV as “the most intelligent application of minimalism ever to succeed as a car,” and a car of “remorseless rationality.”
The 2CV was outlived by contemporaries such as the Mini (out of production in 2000), Volkswagen Beetle (2003), Renault 4 (1992), Volkswagen Type 2 (2013) and Hindustan Ambassador (originally a 1950s Morris Oxford), (2014).
Those seeking something simple, economical and slightly whimsical will enjoy this car’s Gallic charms. You can be certain you won’t see anything else like it at cruise event or car show in the United States so drop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to see it for yourself, s’il vous plaît.
