1970 Road Runner 383/ Factory 4sp w/ Pistol Grip
1970 Plymouth Road Runner Description
I retired at the beginning of this year and am preparing to move out of state. This is the third of my 5 Mopars to sell and the best car in my collection. (The remaining two are Dusters and will be sold before I move as well).
I'll begin with this standard disclaimer: This car is 46 years old and has never been restored. Therefore, it is not perfect. I bought this car almost 10 years ago as a survivor that had been sitting in someone's garage for 11 years. The wide oval tires that were on it looked like new and dated back to the mid 70s, so it appears that this car had been sitting inside somewhere for a long, long time. I have done a lot to it to get this car back on the road and in the wonderful condition it is in today.
This is a true 1970 Road Runner RM23 car. It is a 383cid, 4bbl, 4 speed with factory pistol-grip shifter. The engine is not the original but is date coded 1970. The transmission is numbers matching. The car was originally Burnt Orange with a Burnt Orange interior. I did minor body work and painted the car metallic burnt orange with a copper-pearl midcoat. The hood stripe and other accents are part of the basecoat. This was a quality paint job starting with epoxy primer over bare metal. Although I painted the car a few years ago, I sanded and buffed it just this Summer. The paint looks new and has a mirror finish. However, it is far from a perfect paint job. It has a few minor chips and scuffs and some color discontinuity here and there but still looks pretty awesome, even close up.
The car has a new windshield and some of the chrome trim pieces on the grille were replaced with new ones. I just installed new Cooper Cobra RWL radial tires. The front brakes are also new. I replaced the entire fuel system including the gas tank, sender, fuel pump, and carburetor. The engine runs great and was otherwise left untouched. The seats and dash pad are in great condition. I put in new carpet and door panels. I also replaced the headrests with nicer ones, which have been dyed to match the interior.
The stock rallye guages were replaced with an entirely new electronic gauge cluster behind the stock faceplate. This awesome product is brand new on the market and is made by Dakota Digital as a direct replacement for 1970 B-bodies. The guages have many user features and programming options available, including output for a shift light. All operating and programming instructions are included. My car is the only one I have seen with these gauges so far.
I have done countless other small repairs and replacements on the car over the years that are too numerous to mention. It could still use a few things (see headliner, sailboard, & shift boot pics) and some TLC. Also, the fender tag went missing well before I got the car. The stock AM radio does not work but I have never investigated as to why.
This car is entirely rust-free, although the center of the trunk floor is a little pitted from a prior water/rust issue that was fixed. The car looks & operates great. It is one of the nicest unrestord 1970 Road Runners you are going to find. I have a very reasonable reserve on the car as I absolutely need to sell it.
