1967 Plymouth Fury III Convertible. Gorgeous in Onyx Black. One of 4527 built
1967 Plymouth Fury III Description
Last legally driven in 1985, 36 years ago,and shortly thereafter, this pre-1970 Plymouth Fury III Series convertible began its journey towards restoration, at which point its previous owner for reasons unknown stopped, only to have it begin a long hiatus in storage until I acquired it.
Upon acquiring it, I noted it had new upholstery, carpet, paint (now older), a new alternator, new rear brakes, and what appeared to be a engine refresh. Its convertible top was in shambles, but partially removed in expectation of replacement. And thus thesorting began to what you now see, making it a very nice "driver quality" convertible which runs magnificently. A Sony Am/Fm CD player with new speakerswere added. The conventional AM radio is inoperative.
Its top with crystal clear rear zip out window is brand new, from Robbins Top company, with all the new support pads, and trim installed, at a collective cost of well over $1000.00. Retraction and opening canbe oft times anemic, andsometimes will require alittle push to get it started. Its fit is fabulous.
Now upgradedwith new spark plugs, all oils and filter replaced (synthetic 10/30 Pennzoil), air filter, fuel filter, brake fluid, new 2 new Tiger Paw radial white wall tires, front wheel bearings clean and repack, completechassis lubrication,(zerk fittings) new muffler and much more, it runs and drives wonderfully.
The Series III paint in Onyx Black was probably applied at the aforementioned date, (around 1985?) and is of course older and exhibits some minor chipping, as few minor runs, fading, and indications of previous body work such such as as near as I can determine, outer sheet metal around the rear wheel wells. Its not great, but very presentable for a driversvehicle. Overall thebody and frame appear to be very solid with very minimal surface rust. Any previous rust issues appear to have been nicely addressed by the former owner. The front and rear bumper chrome illustrate some staining and very insignificant pitting. Stainless steel and aluminum trim are all very nice, as is the glass. The wingwindow regulators can be schizophrenic at times, but do open an close. I do have replacement gears for them. All other window roll up and down nicely.
Current needs to which I have not addressed are a new dash pad, and glove box housing. I do have the older dash pad and glove box housing which are crackedand split.
a 5 main bearing 1967 "LA" (Light) 318 cubic inch engine, producing an advertised 230 h/p (although under reported at the time) and 340 ft/lbs of torque, the Series III convertible is actually quite spry and quick with no smoking, or unusual noises. Oil pressure runs a consistent 60+ psi driving, and 40 psi at 850rpm idle as is illustrated in the accessory oil pressure gauge discreetly mounted underthe center dash. It starts immediately at the turn of the ignition key. Shifting is both smooth and seamless, providing for a very nice experience overall driving. The Fury Series III front suspension is nicely set up with independent torsion bars.
In conclusion, this is a fun, driver quality Plymouth Fury Series III convertible which can be drivenanywhere with confidence. Please make no mistake about it, its not a trailer queen, but shows very nicely for its age and the work which has been performed on it. Could it be made better, certainly, but probably not necessary if you wish to have something not to have to worry about someone touching it, at your local Cruise In.
