1972 Plymouth Duster 340 Duster Description

1972 Plymouth Duster (VS29H2B330xxx) factory original 340c.i. H-code car, numbers matching 340, console automatic with white bucket seats and a real factory TB3 Basin Street Blue “Petty Blue” Duster! The Duster has factory power front disc brakes, power steering, factory A/C car, white interior, white 340 side stripe and trunk stripe, original fender tag and perfect original buildsheet, performance hood scoops were added, sharktooth grill, electronic ignition, inside hood release, factory tint glass, dual exhaust with factory chrome tips and rallye wheels!!! The mileage I believe is correct at 116,198 as the previous owner has had the car for 19 years and had 98k original miles as stated on the PA title when he purchased the car in 1999.

I just finished up a light restoration on this fine 340 Duster including: professional wet sanding/buffing, ECU box, P/S lower seal, tuned and set choke on 4bbl carb, NGK plugs, Brad Penn oil, cleaned fuse box and replace fuses, new battery and correct hold-down, checked brakes and all fluids, cleaned/polished all trim and much more! Although not a 100 point concourse show car… it will certainly garner respect and hold it’s own at any show or car cruise. I would consider the Duster a very nice driver and a little bit of a survivor type car since the entire engine bay and most of the interior is original (except carpet). There are several areas that even have the factory crayon/paint markings visible! This is an original numbers matching 340 Duster that runs and drives beautiful that you can take anywhere and enjoy it!!!

I typically restore or finish around 10 Mopars a year and have been working on them for more than 30 years and I do everyone as they were my own to keep. I put a lot of time, effort, pride and money in the cars that I offer for sale which is evident when viewing one of my cars compared to others for sale. All of the body numbers match on the radiator support, VIN tag, fender tag and on the speaker shelf/trunk divider area. You must check these numbers to authenticate that it is a real 340 Duster.

PAINT AND BODY

The body is in excellent shape and the panels are very nice with very good seems, nice and straight down the sides and has very nice panel fit. The super high-gloss shine was just professionally wet sanded with 2000, 2500, 3000 and 5000 grit paper to achieve the high caliber ultra shine finish. This long process alone took over 60 hours and the finish shows it! The Dusters sheet metal is believed to be all original. The quarters, floor boards, rockers, fenders, hood, doors and frame rails are super clean and appear original. The Duster was painted around 10 years ago (base/clear) and is still in unbelievable nice condition and still has that deep wet look shine! There is a crack in the metal on the passenger side floor pan just behind the seat track stud. It was welded more than 15 years ago and has not changed since. There are a few very small minor paint blem's: the hood has a mark/spot the size of a penny near the passenger side hood scoop, there are a couple very small chips that were touched-up (mostly near window trim), the trunk lid has a pencil eraser size mark near the middle. The paint is what I would call a “nice driver” and rate it a 7.5 out of 10. The doors open and close excellent with the ease of a finger and even the door latches and strikers were cleaned and polished. The sharktooth grill is in nice shape for a driver and has 1 small crack on the bottom center but nice condition. The overall body is extremely nice on the Duster and even the wheel well lips are clean and not full of fillers.

GLASS, CHROME AND TRIM

The glass is in extremely nice condition and looks great. The front windshield is newer PPG glass and is very nice. The side and rear glass is also in very nice condition and only the rear glass has a couple small marks on the driver side near the top but over-all it is really nice shape! The front bumper and rear bumper looks to be rechromed or newer and have very good chrome. The window trim is very clean and was polished for optimum shine.

INTERIOR

The interior is in very good original shape and only has had a newer carpet installed. The door panels, trunk divider, speaker shelf, dash pad, console, headliner and seat covers all look great. The dash pad only has one hair line crack near passenger side but is less than an inch. The factory gauge cluster is in very nice condition but the speedo needle does bounce alot but seems to be somewhat accurate. I do have an extra cluster that I will include with the sale of the car if you feel the need to change the speedo. All factory gauges work and operate correctly. All lighting works as should including the high/low beams, dome light, tail lights, parking lights, turn signals, four-way flashers and license plate light. The factory AM was removed for a newer digital one but the original radio is included in the sale of the car. The E-brake, defrosters, heater, fan, horn, speedometer and dimmer switch all work as should. There is an aftermarket tach added near the steering column. The previos owner said the A/C will work but needs charged. I have not checked it but all appears in good working order.

DRIVE TRAIN / SUSPENSION

The 340 makes excellent power, runs very good through the gears and sounds great. The numbers matching original 340 was not rebuilt by the previous owner (who owned it the last 19 years). So I’m not sure what work was done on the engine but I do know it runs very good. It has what looks like the original heads “J” stamped between the plugs. The factory 340 exhaust manifolds are correct 1972 part # 3614368 and 3418623. The 340 has had chrome valve covers added, an Edelbrock performer intake and a newer Summit Racing 4bbl carb installed. I only use the Brad Penn High Performance oil, which was changed and is ready to go! It is one of the best oils on the market and already has the higher Zinc added in for older cars. The 340 has a casting date of 2-8-72 and engine casting # is 2780930-340. The engine I.D. flat badge number is 2B330107 (near the oil pan). The I.D. numbers below the LH head are MH 340 P 3860 0005 (making it a 1972 engine built on FEB 21st ). There is an occasional small drop of motor oil but nothing that needs attenion. The original radiator is a heavy duty factory A/C rad with a part number of 2998948. It cools excellent even on hotter summer days! The original 904 (D34) transmission has been upgraded to a 727 that appears to have been rebuilt at some time before the previous owner. The part number above the pan are PK3515844 3713 4763 (making it a 1971). The rear end is a 8 3/4 with 3.23 (non-posi) gears in the center and a 489 case number on it. Which is the way it left the factory new according to the buildsheet. It has stock leaf springs, hangers and newer front/rear shocks. The front suspension has been checked over and is in good shape. This excellent drive train combo has very good performance and handles great in all conditions whether highway or city driving. This is a very tight and excellent smooth running and driving 340 factory Duster!
