1966 PONTIAC 2+2 Hardtop Coupe 421-4BBL **Project/Parts**
1966 Pontiac Catalina Description
For your consideration is a1966 Pontiac 2+2 Hardtop Coupe 421-4BBL. In 1966 the Pontiac 2+2 became a model of it’s own, and production for the year was 6,383 vehicles. This particular car was originally sold for $4130 from Niggles Pontiac-Buick in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. It came in a two-tone Cameo Ivory paint w/black vinyl top, black vinyl interior, and a 421-4BBL engine with TH400 transmission.
I bought this car on eBay in 2005 from a seller in Ohio and had it shipped to Oregon. The car was all original with the exception of the 403 motor and TH350 transmission which were taken from a ‘79 Trans Am. I eventually found a "donor" 1966 Pontiac 2+2 in Boston, MA. The body was rusted and the interior was moldy, but the original 421 motor and TH400 transmission ran beautifully! I bought that car, pulled the motor and tranny, and sold the “carcass” for a mere $400.
As you can tell from the date stamp on the block (see pictures), the donor car was manufactured in early ‘66 with an engine block forged in ‘65. Nevertheless, this motor and tranny are "correct" for the car, not to mention the fact that there was no such thing as “matching numbers” trim data for 1966. Note: the engine stand holding the block is included in this auction.
As you can see from the pictures, the car is stripped down and the body is completely off the frame. If restored, the body will require plenty of metal fab work. The rear quarter half-skins purchased from JC Whitney, and included in this auction, will help. The corners of the trunk are rusted and will also require work. The frame has been welded in the front corners where rust had weakened its strength integrity, but it is otherwise solid. I have tried to retain as many original nuts, bolts, and fasteners as possible, but obviously much of this hardware was not worth keeping. The are literally boxes of parts, but eBay limited me to 24 pictures so unfortunately I can't show everything.
There is a lot of value associated with this auction, most notably the UNDAMAGED 421 engine block, crank, pistons, and professionally restored heads (by Tabor Automotive Machine, Inc., Vancouver, WA).New parts include an Offenhauser intake manifold (original manifold was salvaged), Crower "Torque Beast" (278H) camshaft, Crower 0.842 hydraulic lifters, TH400 shift kit, set of (4) B.F,. Goodrich tires, front coil springs, complete brake line kit, glove box liner,GM door pulls, wheel trim chrome, rear quarter 6-louvers chrome trim, rear deck "2+2" emblem, window sash channels, heater blower motor, and heater box gasket.
I have always kept the car and parts stored in a warm, dry garage or in my house. The original interior is in very good to excellent condition, and most would not need to be re-upholstered. The front and rear chrome bumpers are in excellent condition, with only a couple very small dents. The car comes with all of it’s original glass, including the tinted windshield. The hood, rear deck lid, and doors are in good shape aside the rust damage to the bottom of the doors and front fenders.
LOCAL PICK-UP ONLY - I WILL NOT SHIP ANYTHING. Buyer has 30 days from auction close to pick up the car and all parts. Removing the body will be a challenge since it is off the frame.
Buyer agrees to make a PayPal down-payment of $500 within 48 hours of auction close. Balance of closing price, payable in cash, check, or money order, is due within 14 days of auction close. Title will be transferred to buyer when the full amount of auction closing price is paid.
