Some say that the GTO is responsible for the start of the muscle car war! They packed a large powerful V8 engine in their mid size car and advertised it as a Muscle Car. John DeLorean and his team had a major hand in the success of the GTO by shoving a 389 engine, which came out of a Bonneville and Catalina into a mid sized Tempest and called it the G.T.O.. John got the name from a Ferrari 250 GTO which meant Gran Turismo Omologato. Pontiac officials called it the Grand Tempest Option, but regardless what the letters stood for, the Pontiac GTO was the fastest car produced by the division and throughout the muscle car era, the GTO will always be remembered as one of the baddest muscle cars of all time. After 1970, the pinnacle year of the muscle car craze, de-tuning of the large cubic inch power plants started changing the way we viewed these cars especially in the eyes of the government and this generation (1968-1972) GTO will soon be just a memory. In 1972, the 455 Big Block was an option offering only 250 horse but still cranking out massive torque and if you were good with a wrench, you could still load the block up with aftermarket performance bolt ons to make this car scream again. But by 1972 it seemed we became a little more gentleman like, a little more refined and we checked off options like A/C and chose an automatic over a 4 speed, also wanted an 8 track, but the kid in us still wanted high numbers under the hood for "show off" reasons so we ordered the 455 just because.....
This PHS documented 1972 Pontiac GTO is 1 of 5 built with these options. The options include 455 Big Block, Factory A/C, and the 2 door Post design. We all know when adding a car to the collection or wanting to get started with your first muscle car, the lesser the production numbers, the higher the value. Please read on about the condition of this great classic and watch the video at the bottom. Thank you for viewing.
Exterior:
The exterior is in excellent restored condition showing an older restoration. The paint shows great shine but has some minor cracking in areas (see photo). The body is straight but has a few indents on the left rear quarter panel as if it were lightly bumped. A good paintless dent remover would be able to get them out. You can hardly notice but wanted to mention even for the most critical eye. All the glass is in excellent condition and the vinyl top was replaced at the time of restoration and is in excellent condition. All the bright work and chrome is also in excellent condition. The wheels are original to the car. What makes this vehicle so rare is the Post option. Not many at all were produced with the post. The underneath, floors, frame and trunk pan are original and solid(see photos). The exterior would stand tall at any cruise night or show but has some flaws close up. An excellent driver quality(+). Please view the photos and video and let us know of any questions you may have.
Interior:
The interior however, is completely original with only minor wear. The dash has no cracks, the carpet is clean with no rips. The door panels are original and the driver's side shows wear but much above average for the miles and age. The headliner does have about a 2 inch tear right next to the sun visor and a good interior guy could probably make it look a lot better. Even the seats have no rips or tears. Car still has its factory 8 track. Its a very well preserved interior and you can tell its owners really maintained the interior. Please look at the pictures and let us know of any questions you may have.
Drive-Train:
The drive train is 100% original to the car. The 455 is the original numbers matching engine. The TH400 transmission is matching numbers as well. Also the rear is numbers matching. As you can tell from the pictures, the engine compartment and underneath have not been detailed, just maintained. A good cleaning and a few rattle cans could bring the GTO up to the next lever. All components are road worthy and the car is very street worthy. As you can see in the video the engine runs strong and shifts great. An excellent example of how a car should have been treated over the years. Tires are fairly new. The car came from factory with A/C and the system will need a shot of freon. You'll see photos of the the trim plate, and stampings on engine and transmission. If there are any questions please let me know!
In Summation:
1972 marks the last time a GTO will look like a GTO and remind of us how awesome the muscle car war was. This car is an honest car with being largely original (interior and drive-train). If you're looking for a desirable car to purchase from this era this may be the one for you. Being 1 of 5 always help. If there is any more information you need please do not hesitate to ask.
