1969 Pontiac Trans Am Description
This is a rare example of the limited production 1969 Trans Am. Very original and numbers matching. Complete with its original 400 Ram Air III engine residing under the hood, and numbers correct 4 speed. The car is painted in its original color both inside and out, this 1969 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am comes with a book that is 3" thick that provides an unusually high level of authenticity, that comes with the PHS documentation.
Collectability? Absolutely! There were under 697 total 1969 Trans Ams produced as they were a late introduction for 1969. Many have been destroyed in the years past, and there are less 4 speeds available. This car does not disappoint and is all there. Comes with some unique options, the late "formula" steering wheel, the Stair Step Gages, in dash tach, AM/FM radio, 8 Track player, console, and remote mirror. Has Power steering, Power brakes. Nice Blue interior in great shape.
It is in very clean condition, in fact the previous owner spent hours detailing the underside of the car - so great to look at from all angles. This car drives great and will continue to do so for years to come.
History, you bet! The 1969 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am marked an inauspicious beginning for amuscle carthat would soon become Pontiac's performance flagship.
Officially titled the Trans Am Performance and Appearance Package, the $725 option was launched in March 1969 with little fanfare and no advertising. It was ordered on just 697 Firebird coupes and eight convertibles. Its name came from the popularTrans American racing series, though thecarnever actually competed in Trans Am racing.
Its baseenginewas theFirebird 400HO's 335-bhp 400-cid V-8, but with standard Ram Air induction. It came to be called the Ram Air III. The only alternative was the Ram Air IV version. Ordered on a mere 55 Trans Am coupes, Ram Air IV had a longer-duration cam and 345 bhp. The base mill came with a three-speed and 3.55:1 gears, the Ram Air VI with a four-speed and 3.90:1 cogs, and both were available withautomatic. A heavy-dutysuspensionwith one-inch frontstabilizer bar, Polyglas F70xl4s on seven-inch rims, and special high-effort variable ratio powersteeringwere standard.

The hood, a Trans Am exclusive, had functional air inlets that could be closed by the driver. Rear-facing fiberglass fender scoops covered fist-sized holes designed to vent the engine bay. A 60-inch air foil spanned the rear deck. The interior was basic Firebird, though an optional rally cluster added a 160-mph speedometer and 8000-rpm tach. Buyers also could order an $85 hood-mounted rev counter.

"We were safely passing chains of cars, eight, nine, ten at a whack... and not having tobrakefor the corner, but carving the turns at high speed," said Sports Car Graphic after a mountain-road sortie. It took Trans Am just three years to dethrone theGTOas Pontiac's most-popular performance offering. Its beginnings may have been humble, but the car would never be.
The exterior is the original Cameo white paint which is in top form and comes with the usual pair of blue racing stripes. The door jambs are equally well finished. still have a finished, uniform texture to them. This '69 still carries the twin dual headlight configuration, distinctive split grille and slightly pointed nose that set it apart from its rivals. That pair of subtly shaped scoops aren't just there for ornamentation - they're fully functional and part of the Ram Air 3 configuration, sending cold, dense air to the waiting engine below. We get to see our share of well- preserved classics here, but we still can't help but be impressed with just how well-finished this Pontiac is - the chrome trim and badging throughout looks sharp, the glass on all four sides is nice and clear, and all the body panels sit flush.
A seriously impressive Blue interior sits inside the doors looking great. Hop into the driver's seat and take a look above, and you'll see a nice tight matching blue headliner. Just beyond the Formula steering wheel, the dash area also looks impressive, with a set of still-functional gauges in the instrument cluster and a fresh-looking dash pad just above that carries no splits. A period-correct AM/FM radio still sits at the center and if you look just below it, you'll see a great-looking burl patterned insert on the center console with a functional 8-track player. The trunk area in back is in just the clean shape you'd expect.
The high output 335 HP V8 in the engine compartment is the same one this Firebird started out with mated up with an original 4-speed manual transmission. Even among well-preserved classics, the engine compartment stands out - the silver paint on the engine matches nicely with its chrome valve covers and you can't help but notice the distinctive Ram Air gasket encircling the carb.
