1981 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Description

This is a true matching numbers V8 Trans Am as confirmed by the build sheet from Pontiac. This is an appreciating classic with highly desired Bandit inspired factory options installed on this particular car. Everything one would expect from a Factory Delivered original Bandit version is in this vehicle. The appraiser verifies that the car is all original fully documented and NUMBERS MATCHING. There is no visible rust or corrosion on the vehicle. This vehicle was professionally resprayed in the factory... correct code paint. However the pin-striping and decals ARE NOT CORRECT and easily remedied. The Firebird logo apparently is missing from the gas cap cover as well. This variant is unofficially known as the “Bandit Edition” reserved only for the manual transmission variants with the T-Top factory option black paint tan interior “screaming chicken” on the hood gold accents and appropriate factory mag wheels. Importantly all of these options were factory installed according to this vehicle’s build sheet. This is NOT a Bandit Tribute car it is an original factory built and optioned “Unofficial Bandit Edition”. All accessories are in working order and are ORIGINAL (stereo excluded). However there are decals on the shaker that state this is a 6.6 car. IT IS NOT A 6.6 This is a numbers matching vehicle and the 6.6 was not offered in 1981. This car has the original 305 CID engine and is NOT the turbo edition. The paint is in refined condition with some minor blemishes which could easily be repaired. Most issues would be resolved with a good buffing/detailing. The T-Tops appear to be original and all glass is original. This appraiser would recommend that all window and T-Top seals be replaced as there is evidence they are nearing the end of their service life. There is no evidence of water intrusion. The interior appears near 100% original. The door cards may have been replaced at some point but are appropriate. The seating surfaces show signs of use but are in near-excellent condition for their age. There were no rips tears in any of the upholstery. The car also has the appropriate “Body by Fisher” door sill plates adding to the authenticity and originality of this car. This particular vehicle is extremely original. Beyond the respray this vehicle is literally untouched and it shows. This is a unique situation where from an originality standpoint this car should be considered Excellent. However this vehicle is not near “show” condition. That said a true “Bandit” edition from the factory is somewhat rare. Originality counts. Vehicles like this that have been modified and not true factory “Bandits” have done extremely well at auctions in 2019. Therefore this appraiser rates this vehicle as above “Good” in valuation ratings which could approach “Excellent”. This vehicle has comprehensive documentation including the original dealer build sheet. This car is PHS eligible which is critical for true collectors fully factory original “Bandits” command top dollar. All original which is absolutely critical for this particular car. Any engine restoration on this vehicle should be only completed by a classic restoration professional. I would classify the engine exterior housing as “barn find”. However the engine immediately fired and appears to be in excellent working condition. There were no drivability issues and the transmission proved to have the requisite 3.42 gearing. So although the exterior of the engine cosmetically appears lacking it is obvious that it has been diligently serviced. No smoke. On shutdown no stutter. The interior honestly shows as one of the best near original interiors this appraiser has seen on this edition of the Trans Am. Drivability is no problem and pleasurable. Be prepared for plenty of stares and “thumbs up” signs driving this car. This vehicle’s internals was closely cared for in all the ways that truly matter and the driving experience highlights that.
