1972 Porsche 914 w/ 1974 drive train & rebuilt engine!
1972 Porsche 914 Description
Good afternoon.
For sale is a 1972 Porsche 914. The vehicle was repowered 4 years ago with all drivetrain (engine and transmission) from a 1974 Porsche 914.
The story of this car is as follows:
I purchased it due to my never ending obsession of Porsches (currently have a Carrera Targa SC, 944 Turbo, Cayenne) and other VW Auto Group brands (also own an RS6, S8, Jetta) --- have owned many many others. I pursued this car as it had very very minimal rust and if you're looking at this car you know that is VERY RARE. Most importantly --- the car has original pans, etc. which is again a rare occurrence considering most other 914's you see for sale have been chop-shopped. Upon purchasing it, driving it home for 2 hours and parking it in my garage (previous owner kept it indoors as well) I came to realize that I have way too many projects going on and I really need to finish my SC build prior to starting an another one. With that said --- I have decided to sell this 914 and will also be listing my 1987.5 944 turbo as well in the near future as I need space and could also use the funds to finally finish my 911.
About the car:I purchased it off the 3rd owner who has owned it and garage kept it since 1991. He has conducted all of the maintenance on it himself and, conducted the engine/tranny swap on it himself as well. He did not have anymaintenance recordsfor the vehicle --- however appeared to be a very knowledgeable, trustworthy Porsche enthusiast/PCA member. The car's condition speaks for that as well. The engine rebuild occurred prior to its swap in 4 years ago and was quite extensive inclusive replacement of pistons, re-machining of all typical internals, replacement of all gaskets, etc. --- top/bottom end. There has been 10K miles put on it after the rebuild. The transmisssion was NOT rebuild. However, shifts great and did have the fluid changed in it. Considering it's the 1974 --- it also has less slop than the 1972 original.
The car rides fairly tight. I have had it up to 80mph and it's fairly solid. Brakes well and has the 1974 all wheel brake disk set up as well. The lines have been recently replaced along with the master cylinder --- which I am quite certain is a 911 unit.
The engine is fitted with SSI's and the fan/defrost works quite well. The lights all work and the car is in excellent driving condition --- really could be suitable as a daily. The window regulators work, seat adjustments work, latches and handles all work. Only items I have noticed that do not seem to operate are the radio (car comes with a spare one) and the left turn signal which appears to just latch and not blink. Both are a very easy fix. The car also does have a Monza exhaust which sounds quite good.
In regards to interior condition. It is original. However, in much better shape than most I've seen. The carpet could use a replacement if you're very particular --- however it really is in good shape. The seats do have some rips in vinyl (and the passenger one is missing the bottom cushion fabric) --- however are in excellent structural shape and will cost just a few hundred bucks to reupholster. The foam in all of the seats isin excellent condition.This would be the easiest interior restoration project one could imagine. Easy weekend job. Door panels are quite nice and the dash does not have any cracks either. The Targa top is in pretty darn good shape. Using some "mothers back to black" would get it to a fantastic shape. All latches work as they should.
Exterior wise --- the car's factory color is orange. The prior owner had re-sprayed it --- however the job was quite "budget" in nature and is a "5-10 footer". I think with a bit of buffing, replacement of gaskets and repainting of a few panels it would be in really darn good shape.
In regards to under carriage --- again --- really good shape for the age. As you can see by the pictures --- the rust is VERY limited. It really is surface (where it does exist) and there really really is not much of it on the undercarriage. The pans are original. The car still has a lot of the factory undercoating on it which I think should be scraped off and redone as it comes off quite easily with a pressure washer. If the undercoating is redone the undercarriage would look really nice.
In regards to rust --- as mentioned previously --- it is quite minimal. The major spot is the cowl (where the owner did tell me that he got it off and used some bondo to repair it (it is noticeable) and then there are some spots on the rear portion of the door jambs. The front part (where the door hinges are) are really clean which is great as that is typically a very difficult area to redo. The bottom of the doors are excellent as well. My plan was to strip the cowl and the rear portion of door jambs and re-do them. Fairly quick weekend job if you're handy.
In regards to wheels - they are in great shape and have very good tires.
All in all --- the car is in great shape for its age. It has been well kept and it shows. Rust is minimal and overall the car could be restored to a fantastic shape for a few thousand $$. These are appreciating in value quite considerably and according to Hagerdy's one just like this in "fair condition" is worth nearly 12K as it is now.
