My son's car: He's moved on to something newer and more dull!
This is a well maintained car, always nicely cared for. It's in nice shape for its age and mileage. The motor smokes and has piston slap when cold. It idles quietly when warmed, and runs very sweetly. The trans-axle is excellent: Smooth, quiet and good synchros. The steering is still sharp, ride is good, and it's still very entertaining on a twisty road. Brakes are great (with the exception of the hand brake, which is inoperative); there's good pedal pressure, and the car stops in a straight line with hands off the wheel. The clutch is smooth and bites just like new. I love driving this car.
Interior is clean and in mostly good shape. Leather seats have a tear on the drivers seat. Carpets are good, if a little stained. Dash top has typical cracks. Also typical for sunroof model Saab 900: The headliner is junk, and a good portion of the fabric has been ripped out...The padding is still there (see pictures!) The sunroof works fine, doesn't leak, and is delightful to have. Power windows go up and down fine. All instruments work, except for the clock – the clock runs, but not on our time scale (maybe for some other planet). The wipers wipe, and the horn works. Cruise control doesn't hold a set speed. Power mirrors and seat work beautifully. Original factory “Saab” branded Clarion/caste stereo works. Owners manual and the sound system manual are in the thick, padded pouch with Saab crest on it. Also tucked in there is the original window sticker, listing all the original equipment and costs -- a neat artifact! (New sticker price was $23,385 in 1992)
Instruments light up at night, and all exterior lighting and signals works, except for the reversing lights, (the bulbs are good, so I imagine it's a switch at the gear stick). One of the license plate lamps is missing a lens; they're available new on eBay for a few bucks. Both headlamps are in nice shape.
Air conditioning does NOT work – No belt hooked up and we never tried it. There's a sticker under the hood saying the system was retrofitted with R134a refrigerant at some time, but I know nothing more about the system. Otherwise, Saab's excellent heater/defrost/ventilation system works great: The stepper motor works like it's supposed to, and the blower works on all speeds.
The car looks great from a few steps away. The paint is still shiny, but has plenty of little scratches and dents and the paint on the hood is crazed. There are typical little pockmarks in the paint at the leading edge of the hood. There are small spots of surface rust around the car, and some rust-through on one door. Strangely, one wheel arch has significant rust around its perimeter, while the others are really good. There is some localized rust patching (the wheel arch and along the bottom of the hatch lid). Except for small touch-ups, the paint looks substantially original, and I can't find any evidence of accidents or any significant damage repair to the car. Panel fit all around is excellent, and the entire body shell is strong and tight: Typical Saab.
The Saab 900 looks it's very coolest in black, with black-out window trim: It looks a lot like a Turbo model! It amazes me how many young people in German 'tuner cars' give it a thumbs up! (I think it's cool that they even know what it is!)
All the glass is excellent. Most importantly, the windshield is PERFECT: No road rash, no scratches, no wiper grooves.
Car is very solid underneath. Much better than one might expect by looking at the upper body: There's very little rust down below, and there's a beautiful stainless steel exhaust system from the manifold back. You can see all this in the detailed pictures on the Flickr photo link.
The factory alloy wheels are in really beautiful shape for their age. There are two good tires on the front, but the rears are toast and should be replaced...like now.
So...overall what we have here is a nice old car, well cared for, but with a tired motor. The body is good, and the interior is good. It runs great for the moment, but the motor's days are numbered without some significant rehabbing. It's a great car for a Saab specialist who wants to do a rebuild or for someone who has a better motor to swap out. The basic car is still really good, useful and fun...I love GM, but they didn't do Saab any favors: These classic 900s are the last “Real Saabs”, and they're getting more and more rare. I'd love to see this one saved by an enthusiast.
