1986 Shelby GLHS Omni Description
You are bidding on a super cherry 1986 Dodge Shelby GLHS with just over 19,500 miles. If you are looking at this auction you probably know quite a bit about these cars and know their historical and collector value. These cars could only be purchased at Shelby authorized Dodge dealerships in 1986 and they were all built exactly the same, here were no Shelby installed options available. They are equipped with a specially prepared 175 HP 2.2 liter engine with a high flowing two piece intake coupled with a Garrett turbo charger that was also intercooled with a front mount intercooler, 5-speed manual transmission and a number of other Shelby go-fast goodies including Koni adjustable shocks at all four corners, pgraded brakes, quick ratio steering rack, eather steering wheel and shift knob, nd the Carroll Shelby signed and numbered dash plaque. This is a lower numbered car being car #150 of 500 built.
This VERY low mileage car that has a genuine Shelby American pedigree and it will out run just about anything on the street except the strongest of today's performance cars. It also is a blast to drive, andles super well, s easy to get in and out of, as a nice seating position, asy to reach controls, nd has the cool sleeper characteristic of looking like a economy four door grocery getter if you don't notice the Shelby emblems!
Make no mistake though; this is a SERIOUS performance car according to anybody that has owned one as well as Road & Track magazine. In their shootout between the 86 GLHS and the legendary 66 Mustang GT350, ell...guess which car was faster, andled better, topped quicker, nd is still affordable! Yes, he little GLHS quite literally blew away the GT350. The GLHS was also one of Carroll Shelby's favorite cars and he continued to own and drive one of the original test cars well into his later years. Since his passing his cars continue to increase in value with many being well into the millions of dollars now. The GLHS is quickly escalating in value as well with the value of these specific cars having doubled just in the last 18 months. This is indeed a piece of automotive history and is a numbered Shelby American built car that was modified at the Whittier California facility by team Shelby and that is in the Shelby registry.
I bought this car about a year ago for the sole purpose of completing the restoration started by the previous owner and then to offer the car for sale. I already own an 86 GLHS and several other turbo Dodge Shelby cars. The previous owner purchased two very low mile cars and then took all the best of parts from both cars to build one show room appearing car. I got the 'other' car and all the parts that he decided he did not want to keep as low mileage spares. The car came to me as a roller, issing many parts and it was almost completely taken apart. So almost every single nut and bolt on this car had to be turned to put 'humpty dumpty back together again. Unfortunately, he previous owner did decide he wanted to keep the original engine and transmission from this car and he gave me the engine and transmission out of the other 86 GLHS car. So make note, hat this car does not have the original engine in it but it does have a complete and absolutely date correct 86 Shelby GLHS engine and transmission in it from another GLHS.
The restoration of this car, hich was basically a put it back together exercise that took just less than a year, nd there was a ton of NOS and original equipment parts used during the reassembly. All the work and parts used in the restoration are listed below.
The car is un-modified, t was returned to stock condition, survivor if you will, nd it presents very very nicely. A favorite at car shows and certainly an investment grade automobile that continues to escalate each year in value. The engine bay looks clean and original, ll the Shelby exclusive items are present and in great shape. There is a list below of almost ever single part that was used to reassemble this car. Most of the parts are not 'repairs' they were just required to complete assembly of the complete car. There were also a lot of wear and tear items replaced like belts, oses, ilters, rake pads, iper insertes, tc, tc, tc. The engine in this car was just rebuilt using only factory original parts wherever possible. It has a new cylinder head and of course a new perma-torque head gasket, hermostat, ll new belts and hoses, f course all the tune up parts like plugs, ap, otor, ires and all fluids and filters. It also has the GLHS correct early slider cam which has a bit more duration than the later cams, his adds even more performance and is the correct cam for this car and engine. The engine runs like new, he transmission shifts great, t is filled with the factory suggested 10W30 dino oil. Not synthetic. The engine is filled with the Shelby specified Mobil 1 Synthetic.
It has a fresh set of standard bearings and blows no smoke and has 3x150lbs and 1x145lbs of compression in the cylinders (dry). 60+psi of oil pressure cold and when hot and above idle, ood oil pressure at idle both hot and cold, o oil light flickering at all. Good oil pressure, o knocks at cold startup either. Engine is solid. The engine runs like new, he transmission shifts great, t is filled with the factory suggested 10W30 dino oil. Not synthetic. The engine is filled with the Shelby specified Mobil 1 Synthetic.Of course all the normal wear and tear items have been replaced, ike belts and hoses, luids and all filters.
It has a new high flow 2.5" catalytic converter from CatCo under it with original Chrysler stainless steel exhaust so it is also a 50 state legal car and can and will pass emissions in at least 49 states. I'm not so sure about California, hear they have something special going on over there but here in Georgia where the car is based, t doesn't even need to be inspected to be registered, agged and driven on the public roads. Many states are this way on cars over 25 years old. This car has the stock engine control unit in it, t does not have the Stage II LM which is still available from Mopar Performance. The factory boost levels are fine and offer a lot of fun for the mile, ith a stage II LM, ou need to have a little bit better grip on the wheel before you press down the right foot. Either way, t is easy to get rubber on shifts and this car can and will get away from you if you are not aware of and pay respect to the boost when it comes on and it does come on pretty quick because this little car is well, little car and it doesn't weigh very much. It's part of the secret sauce that makes these cars so incredibly fast and totally fun to drive. You can take the kids to soccer, oftball or music lessons and throw equipment or groceries in the hatch and get 25+ MPG while doing that, R...you can drive it to the track for some autocross trophy collecting with the spouse, nd then drive it home with big smiles all around. In traffic it has fantastic visibility all around, nd it moves in and out of the lane with ease. Do you get the idea here? FAST, un, conomical, ollectible with a genuine pedigree and practical! The only real upgrade to this car's drive-train was the installation of a Walbro 255Lph fuel pump, nd new in-tank filter sock and stock external fuel filter and the front brakes were upgraded with the popular SLH (stops like he^^) front brake caliper conversion. Back in the 80's you could actually purchase a special hardware kit that included the Kelsey Hayes single piston brake caliper and the caliper to strut adapter along with some special Mopar Performance metallic brake pads. What is amazing is that these were the same brakes (less the semi-metallic race brake pads) that were installed on the minivan vehicles. The Charger, he sister to the 86 GLHS already had good brakes, s did the GLHS, ut when the minivan race brakes are added to the front, his thing can really really come to a quick stop. There is no ABS on this car. But anyway, was super lucky to find another turbo Shelby enthusiast that had an NOS set of this brake upgrade kit, till in original Chrysler packaging, o on they went along with a fresh turning of the factory rotors. Also installed all new brake hoses and rear wheel cylinders and hoses, lso proportioning valve to master cylinder and front to rear metal brake lines. So when the turbocharger gets you going the SLH brakes will get you stopped! New front wheel bearings, actory bearings too by the way, ot cheap China bearings, actory bearings. The body, ni-frame and sheet metal on this car are all very solid. No evidence of any rot through any quarter panels or fenders. The only visible blemish is about the size of the end of my small finger at the right rear wheel on the lip of the rolled edge, t is pictured below. It's minor, asily fixable and hard to catch a good picture of it on a black car, ut it is pictured below. The underside was under coated when new apparently and it's done a good job protecting the sheet metal from what I can tell. See the pictures and you be the judge. The frame jack pads of course show signs of being used. This car spent most of it's life in North Carolina, ive years in Michigan, nd for the past few years in Georgia.
The paint is not original, t has been repainted somewhere in it's past but it was a nice job. I don't know who, hen or where. It does have all it's Shelby emblems and identity decals in place. It is no longer a show car quality paint job, ut it probably was in it's day. It shows darn well at car shows and people are amazed at the cars overall nice condition and low miles. There are some surface scratches on the hood, t looks like the hood was wiped with a dirty towel maybe, think they will buff out but you might consider the hood would look best with a professionals touch. But, he car has plenty of shine, o clear coat pealing at all, t is shiny and very straight, eah it has a scuff or two, tried to get any of them in the hi-res pics. I think it could look better if it were polished, ut it is a black car and it just shows everything. There is a half thumb sized impression in the rear hatch cover, ee the pics please. On the rear hatch, he impressions look like what you might get if you had your thumb on the cover then slammed the hatch down. I only notice these when the car was parked out in the Sunshine and when viewed from just the right angle. I have not yet seen even a single door ding, ut I won't say that there isn't one somewhere. I think it is fair to say the car still looks great from afar as well as up close. But it's not a show car, his car has been driven, t's 30+ years old. It is not easy to find the places where you can see this car was repainted and the repaint was years back. But I know that it was repainted. The interior is all original and in very nice and clean condition. The carpet is original, ot perfect but also still looks great and is basically free from huge stains or any rips or wear-out patches like from a shoe heal. In fact the heal pad looks great on the drivers side. No holes or excessive heal and toe wear to make note of. Original seat covers so they should be considered a bit tender. It has a brand new head liner that looks super, he dash is almost like new, t still also sports its original factory AM/FM cassette radio. The AM/FM works, nd it has two new bi-axial speakers in the doors, ut I don't even own a cassette tape any more to test the tape drive. Everything inside and all lights work as they should, ven the rear hatch light and the package and privacy shelf is present and functional. The heater and air conditioner are fully functional, ll the modes work, nd the fan runs quietly on all speeds. Blinker switch works, right lights dipper works, mergency flashers work, ash lights dimmer works, ighter works but looks like new, ome light illuminates when you open a door and the dome lenses looks like new/not yellowed and cracked as so many are. Sun visors you ask...check, ook great and both move freely and the covers look great. I am a non-smoker, he previous owner is a non-smoker, he car shows no signs of being smoked in and smells fresh and clean. The only nit worth mentioning on the interior is that the drivers door arm rest at the top needs to be replaced for the interior to be even nicer and there is a seam that has split at the top of the rear seat cover, nd on the passenger seat bottom. This is shown in the pictures below. All the interior door lock buttons work, anual windows go up and down easily. All the glass is original, he windshield has a smaller than a pea size stone chip in it that I noticed but it is the original Shelby glass with the original sticker so I'm not sure you even want to think about dealing with it. The original leather wrapped Shelby steering wheel is present, ts in good condition with no tears or rips. The original leather wrapped Momo shift knob is MIA. The shift knob on the car at this time is a period correct shift knob from a 84-87 Shelby Charger. The Momo can still be purchased, ast I looked it was about $70.No FRONT floor mats present, here are nice, lean, olor matched mats in the rear. The stock halogen 4x6 headlamps were replaced with E-code Hella Glass lenses with very bright H4 bulbs. The bulbs are white, ot blue and I think they are the legal 55W units, ut they are quite bright since the lenses are glass E-codes. Since they are glass they are never going to fade. The lenses are Hella genuine so they are DOT approved. I'm not so sure they are street approved though. I have them well adjusted at a proper height so on coming traffic is not being blinded but lets leave it at, ou won't have any trouble seeing where you are going at night. The original BOSCH Pilot with period correct covers are also present and fully functional. The fog and driving lights are activated by the Shelby installed toggle switch which is on the passenger side of the dash knee bolster. The suspension includes the original Koni adjustable shocks and poly lower control arm bushings, nd a rebuilt steering rack. The adjustable Koni struts and shocks are fully functional and show no signs of leaking. Just make note that they are 25+ years old and if they ever need to be rebuilt, hey can be rebuilt and Koni North America will do it right here in the USA. I've had several of these cars with these adjustable corners on them and the cost is approximately $350 for a strut and $150 for a shock. The car has four good tires on it with a good amount of tread remaining. A fresh alignment and set to Shelby specifications with -.5* camber on the front struts. So, f you like taking turns on two wheels, ou're not going to get any warning before it cuts loose like on the granny setup that the factory puts on the non-Shelby cars.I also have the near mint owners manual and both the Shelby exclusive GLHS warranty and special features booklets that came with the car new. A copy of the entire Road&Track magazine with the GLHS Vs GT350 artical inside and the 86 Omni GLHS sales brochure. I do not have the original window sticker nor did I locate the build sheet anywhere inside the car during the restoration.Car has a clean Georgia title and no liens. Title is in hand and is in my name. Car is registered in Georgia.A $750 non-refundable deposit is due within 24 hours via PayPal or in cash upon a (eBay)winning end of auction bid, r a Buy It Now with the remaining balance due within 5 calendar days.
