I purchased this FJ60 Toyota Land Cruiser in 1988 so technically I'm the second owner, but it seems like I'm the original owner.
In 1986 Toyota upgraded the FJ60 a bit, making the 5/86 and later FJ60s the 'better' cruisers in some ways than the previous years.
-----
Over the last 30 years I have performed all the maintenance, upgrades and modifications to this cruiser and I'm an expert mechanic and troubleshooting technician with this model of cruiser. I have also facilitated rebuilding several 2F engines over the years for friends and offer technical advice for this model of Land Cruiser on a well known web forum.
This cruiser has a long list of highly desirable and unique modifications which in total can not be found on any other USA FJ60 Land Cruiser anywhere.
It has recently been almost fully restored. I did all the hard mechanical stuff first.
The Goodies and Mods:
-- BODY--
1. Aluminum 48.5 gallon ARB long rang fuel tank. This tank is an engineering work of art. Only a couple of these got imported into the USA from Australia. Super rare. You can cruise on the highway on one tank of gas for approximately 650+ miles (if you wanted to). Zero rust (aluminum tank). Stock fuel gauge is calibrated to the larger tank and fuel remaining can be estimated to within 2 gallons consistently.
2. ARB front winch bull bar (gray galvanized, zero rust). No winch included. Mounted with stainless steel bolts.
3. Toyota HJ61 non-USA weight-adjustable off-road suspension front seats. Driver and passenger. These were very expensive non USA options for the high end HJ61 Turbo Land Cruiser. Amazing 3 inch vertical motion suspension seat frame controlled by spring and dampening shock. Weight adjustable suspension comfort when driving on bumpy roads. Adjustable crank can tension main spring for different weights of people. Driver's seat also has adjustable power lumbar support and bottom tilt. Sides can be adjusted inwards too. This seat is far more comfortable than the stock seats ever were. Fabric is in excellent condition. Always covered. A seat for a king. You can literally drive all day long on the roughest dirt roads in Baja and your back will feel fine at the end of the day. I've done it countless times.
4. Lifted heavy duty suspension. Maybe 4" lift.
5. New heavy duty (8 leaf) springs in the rear with extreme duty greasable shackles (2012).
6. Super burly tow hitch receiver welded to frame
7. Professionally repainted radiator support and valence

-- LOTS OF SPARE PART$ --
All my expensive, rare, discontinued (and impossible to find) spare parts are included with the sale of the vehicle which makes this vehicle sale highly unusual.
* Spare Carburetor
* Spare Distributor
* Spare Carburetor Fan assembly
* 2nd OEM bottle jack
* New Toyota cabin blower motor and fan rotor.
* Spare igniter with coil
* Several duplicates of all emissions parts
* Box of assorted relays
* Spare bolts
* Some specialty tools included
* Literally buckets of discontinued and new spare parts.
-- Other Features --
* No (significant) body rust. No roof rust. Frame is solid. Painted. Sure there's a few grimey bolt heads here and there and a little orange patina under the car in a few places, but nothing significant. No crumbling rust anywhere.
* Engine has been run on synthetic 5W-50 motor oil for the last 28 years. Zero sludge. Super clean inside engine. Oil pump intake screen is perfectly clean. Rear main bearing inspection showed it to be in excellent condition.
* Engine runs really great. Smooth. Starts easily. Revs smooth at all (and high) RPMs. Idles smooth.
* Valve lash recently checked/adjusted.
* Battery in very good condition.
* Zero battery parasitic drain.
* Transmission and transfer case have been filled (and changed) with synthetic gear oil since new.
* All oils/grease have been changed before recommended severe service intervals for the last 30 years.
* No oil leaks - Your driveway will stay clean.
* Original engine block. Overhauled head and manifold.
* Cruiser gets 15 mpg on the highway at sea level (65 mph). Maybe about 12 mpg around town driving easy.
* Engine pulls 21+ inHg of steady vacuum at idle at sea level.
* Engine uses about 1 qt of oil/3000 miles.
* Frame is solid and strong throughout. No rust cancer. There's a little light surface rust in spots and inside frame. Inside of frame has been sprayed with anti-corrosion compound. 3/4 of frame had recently been stripped to bare shiny metal and painted. I ran out of steam to finish the rest.
----------///----------
That's a long enough list for now. There's other improvements and upgrades that I'm sure I didn't list. But I think I got all the big stuff.
This Land Cruiser isn't a concourse show vehicle; It looks a bit no-nonsense rugged (like a Land Cruiser should look) but it's certainly not beat up looking either (though the wheels don't look too fancy). No accidents. The sheet metal is in excellent condition. Original single stage paint is still in very good condition for a vehicle this age although there are some spots here and there that have touch up paint repairs (no rust underneath). Mostly on roof. Car has always been waxed, never deep polished.
Many FJ60s on the road today have been repainted with cheap paint jobs hiding decades of neglect and rust underneath. They were repainted because they looked horrible.
This cruiser has the original single stage paint (no clear coat) and nothing is hidden. No surprises
This car lived it's life in the great outdoors, not in a garage. It's had lots of off road adventures. Many in Baja. This truck is a proven off-road vehicle.
This was never a garage queen and doesn't look like its lived that kind of pampered (and wasted) life. Engine compartment on the other hand does look incredibly nice now though. It's home has been in Southern California it's whole life except for many Baja trips and other adventures nearby. It has never seen salted icy roads.
The truck has been well maintained throughout the years and was recently almost fully restored by me. It has been my only vehicle for three decades. It has never over heated and the oils have always been changed on schedule.
It has been modded over the years specifically for one purpose: off-road long distance cruising, and it's ready to do it again. It's doubtful there are many FJ60s on the road today with a 2F engine that run better than this one. Not just my opinion, but other people have said so.
This recent restoration cost me over $7500, not counting over a year of back breaking work. More than 1500 hours were spent getting the cruiser into the great shape it is today. Probably a lot more than that actually.
This isn't a turn & burn 60 with some lipstick slapped on it and a cheap paint job that's being flipped quick to make a buck. This is my life passion with years of hard work and determination poured into it. All the work I recently completed was done with the aim of me keeping the cruiser "forever", not selling it. You'll see that in the details. But things in my life recently changed, (injured my back) so now it's time to pass the baton on to the next Land Cruiser enthusiast.
The upgraded heavy duty Toyota 60 series full float rear axles, ARB air lockers, Toyota suspension seats, ARB long rang fuel tank & ARB bumper cost more than $6000 over the years. Some of those parts (tank, seats, axles) were extremely rare, no longer available now and highly coveted.
--Some Quirks--
* -NO AIR CONDITIONING-
* The air conditioning equipment has been removed (except for the compressor). It can't be replaced easily, though technically it's possible. Condenser is gone, (which now greatly increases air flow to the radiator) though evaporator is still fine in cab. I converted the AC to an air compressor for tires and differential air locker actuation. I recently removed the air fill plumbing when I was working on the engine to make space to work. This air fill system should ideally be rigged up again. There's no reason not to. AC compressors are the fastest air compressors made for a vehicle. Much faster than any electric compressor.
* No radio. Empty loose pocket in dash. Door speakers don't work.
* Passenger side dash vent near passenger window is disabled (stuffed a rag in it) with upper duct removed to make room under dash.
* The ARB differential lockers need their air lines hooked up to an air source. All air lines and wiring are currently bundled in the engine compartment ready to be connected to a compressor tank. Toyota switches for the system are already hooked up and installed in the dash ready to go. This was my next project I was looking forward to but I ran out of time to work on it. It will be a fun little project for the next owner.
* Glove box is gone. Good riddance to that waste of space. Bottom support has been cut off to allow storing upright Jerry cans on the floor. The cut off support is included if you want to tack it back in there. I definitely wouldn't. The glovebox removal is a great upgrade. I should have done it 30 years ago. The glovebox (when it was installed) was virtually useless. Too tiny.
* Rear outside hatch push lock mechanism has been removed. Lock hole in hatch got damaged from a break-in long ago. Hole is now blocked with tamper proof thick stainless steel plate. Rear hatch is now opened by pulling a cord from left rear door side. Rear hatch is much more secure now from tampering. This is actually an upgrade (for security reasons).
* Right rear side window tint is bubbling. Tint on all other windows is in good condition (replaced 7 years ago). No tint is applied on front doors' windows.
* Rear wheel arch on passenger side has a (very common) oblong rust hole that's been cured and no longer rusting- but hole remains. It's covered with protective tape.
* Front passenger door inner front panel (not visible) has a rust hole that was cured 10 years ago. No longer rusting.
* Wheel arch just above mud flap on left rear has a small hole from rust perforation. Rust has been stopped/cured.
* Wheels are American Racing white steel D-spokes. Old, classic & "rugged" looking. Nobody will steal these wheels. They have plenty of rust specs scattered all around them. They are 28 years old. 15" x 8". Dual valve stems. They have a lot of history to them. Good memories.
* Tires have about 1/2 tread left. Front left a little less. BFG AT KO 31/10.5R15. Spare tire on stock chrome wheel is currently installed on right rear wheel (wheel doesn't match the rest). Fifth wheel with tire is mounted in cab but tire should be replaced (it has a trail repaired sidewall gash).
* Roof and gutters have ZERO rust but my method of preventing rust on the roof entailed several coats of thick touch up paint and clear coat on clean metal treated nicks which doesn't look all that great from above. Definitely not show quality. Underneath the thick touchup paint blotches there's zero rust. The paint & primer is on shiny steel. Roof is solid and protected but blotchy with paint repairs. Gutter is in good shape.
* The small snap-in tailgate carpet panel is 20 years old and stained. New replacements are available. Rear cargo area carpet though is in like-new condition and original. Always covered with a thick cargo mat.
* Vinyl interior wheel arch covers are beat up. After replacing them three times over the decades, I gave up. They were very fragile. New ones are available.
* Carpet in front drivers end of car is old and looks old.
* Throughout the decades I had been pretty diligent trying to prevent rust by spraying a waxy corrosion inhibitor or applying linseed oil on exposed steel. While this definitely prevented rusting, it attracts dirt and the coated parts end up becoming dirty and grimey looking. You'll see evidence of this around the tailgate mounting hardware and a few other places around the truck.
--The Video--
I have recently filmed a walk around video of the cruiser. Outside, inside, and in the engine compartment. There won't be any surprises when you see the car.
You should definitely watch it before coming to see the cruiser in person. After watching it you'll know the cruiser well and whether you want to own it or not. If you are really keen on buying this cruiser, contact me and I will provide you with a link to the video.
