1974 Safare' Camper. 142,000 original miles. 2 owner van. This is a time capsule low mile survivor in excellent original condition. My goal with this bus was to do a preservation with the goal of keeping the bus as original as possible. The bus is all original with the exception of one repaint, new front seat upholstery, and new door panels. Rare factory A/C and factory working propane furnace. The Safare' camper has been garaged most of its life and it shows in its well preserved state. The bus has had only one repaint in its factory rare and desirable Kasan Red (L30-B). There were few Safare' campers made, and even fewer of them exist today, especially with the interior in tact and in near mint condition. This van is more like a motor home than your typical VW camper. The van sleeps 4 (2 below and 2 up top on a slide out bunk). The van has ample storage compared to a standard pop top camper. The rear seat also converts into a sectional style dinette or seating area for 4. The bus has seat belts for 4. It has a on board potable water (11 gallon tank) and a factory rare grey water tank (12 gallon) with a sink (similar to a RV). It has a 2 burner propane stove and super rare factory propane furnace with adjustable thermostat. The propane heater (furnace) works! New correct truck rated Hankook RA08 tires. The van has its super rare awning with its ultra rare factory tent . There are window coverings for every window. Notice the attached and stow-able side entry step and propane tank. This was originally a southwest bus (Arizona), so there is no rust at all, any where... The interior is in near mint original condition and has all of the factory accessories including the factory upper window screens, charming interior lights, rare factory accessories including but not limited to; metal pot that is used to heat water on the stove. The metal pot has a spicket. The pot hangs on a hook about 24 inches above the sink, so essentially you can have "hot running water". This is a ingenious idea/design feature in my opinion. The front floors are mint and the paint still looks new under the rubber mat.
Original Tent/Camping Accessories-This van comes with its super rare factory tent and awning as well as factory snap on bug screens for all the windows including the front door windows, upper screens for the sliding windows on each side of the fiberglass top, ample storage areas under the rear seats and up front above in the storage compartment in the fiberglass top that is discreetly hidden behind the factory interior cabinet door.
Motor/Transmission- Rebuilt motor. At the time of the motor rebuild the clutch, pressure plate, and through out bearing were replaced. Dual exhaust that is ran through its factory heater boxes. Empi racing style shifter. New axles left and right. The motor runs like a watch with plenty of power to cruise on the highway easily. With the upgradedEmpi shifter and linkage, the transmission shifts crisp and tight (much better than stock). The engine and engine bay are spotless clean as seen in the pictures.
Paint & Body- Let me first start off by saying this van has been lovingly cared for its entire life.... This bus has never been in a accident, the nose under the spare tire is perfect. 100% RUST FREE Arizona bus. The bus has had only one repaint in its rare and desirable factory color of Kansan Red (L30-B). The pictures make the red look brighter than it really is. The paint is very similar to Ceiling Wax Red when you see it in person. The bus is arrow strait. All door and body gaps are perfect. The bus has been garaged most of its life and was originally a Arizona bus as confirmed by the state of Arizona Mobile home certification plaque mounted under the Original Safare' plaque on the passenger side dogleg. The floors under the mats are perfect, the paint still looks like new. New windshield and windshield seal. The undercarriage is clean and dry and 100% RUST FREE, the factory undercoating is in excellent condition. I recently had the paint professionally polished as it was slightly oxidized. It came out exceptional...
Interior- The interior is what makes this bus shine above other bay window campers. The interior is nothing short of charming, with some ingenious design features. The interior is in near mint original condition. I did replace the front seat upholstery and installed brand new reproduction door panels. Perfect headliner, nice dash. The front and center rubber mat is near mint. New abs kick panels. The van has a oil temp gauge as well as a tachometer. Nice Blaupunkt cd player, Blaupunt front doorspeakers, amplifier, with sub woofer hidden and mounted in side one of the interior closets. All of the interior lights work as well as all electrical including the dash lights. Note the charming light fixture in the back of the van. There is also factory lighting that runs directly off the aux battery. There is a built in inverter hooked to the aux. battery so you can run small appliances, tv, ect. of the aux. battery or shore power. This van came factory with a propane heater! This is extremely rare and seldom ever found on a stock VW bus. The propane heater has a adjustable thermostat similar to one you would find in your house. The heater works great. Propane heaters are usually a minimum of $1500 parts and labor to have one installed. The fact that thisbus came stock with a propane heater is a definite plus. I installed new carpet over the stock linoleum. I made sure not to damage the original floor when I installed the carpet, so it can be taken back to stock if desired. The rear seat has several different options as far as seating (see pictures). You can put the table up and have a sectional dinette booth style seat, remove the table and have a sectional style couch, or you can rearrange the cushions for a full bench with seat belts while you are driving as. The van sleeps fouradults total. Two up top in the slide out bunk and two below on the fold out bed. The van has its original dual cup holder that mounts between the front seats or on the dash on the passenger side under the glove box. The interior is spotless clean and smells good. I recently spent over 4 hours detailing and cleaning every nook and cranny in the interior. Mounted up in the corner is a small fan that is hooked the the aux battery. The van has nice interior curtains for complete privacy as well as the front snap on window curtain. The van has a very durable and handy (stock) metal roof vent that opens and closes very similar to one you would find on a newer Vangon Westfalia.
Other- Auxiliary battery set up with solenoidisolator and heavy duty battery. Hancook truck rated tires (95%), integrated trailer hitch/receiver that bolts directly to the frame with standard wiring hookup set up to tow a small trailer. KYB gas shocks front and rear. This van came stock with AC, although theAC pump has been removed, the van still has all its condensers,AC lines and wiring intact. The brakes are excellent, the steering is tight.
My goal with this bus was to preserve its originality. I decided to do a very sympathetic, yet thorough preservation to this van. The van was is exceptional shape when I purchased it, but never the less I invested countless man hours and alot of money to bring this van to the next level. This is one of the finest Safare' Campers in the world. The bus runs like a watch and drives beautifully. I have tried to be thorough in my description, but I know I did not list every thing that has been done. This van has been well loved its entire life and it shows. Perfect center piece for your VW collection. The van needs nothing and is ready for cross country camping adventures. I am regretfully selling to finish another project I am working on. With out a doubt, this is one of the most charming camper buseson the marketwith tons of character and personality to boot.
