1982 Volkswagen Jetta Coupe - PROJECT.
Project = i would not drive this car home - i would trailer / tow it.
It does start and run / drive.
1982 Jetta Coupe.
1.6l diesel engine ( non-turbo )
206,500 miles on odometer.
5 speed manual transmission ( FN code )
Was originally equipped with AC - it has been removed.
Only rot / rust is around the front windshield seal. On the passenger side lower cowel there is a spot the size of 50 cent piece.
Lots of bubble rust around the rest of the windshield seal.
I dont see any other rust / rot any where else on the body. There is a dent / mark in passenger side door / edge of fender. Another passenger rear quarter panel. I believe i photographed them.
Other issues:
Front windshield seal is really dry and
The clear coat is peeled on roof / trunk.
Missing the front grill - there is one of the 3 parts of the grill in the trunk.
Both tail lights are cracked.
Missing body trim on driver and passenger side.
Rear passenger fender flare is broken.
No Radio.
Rear view mirror was broke - i removed it and have another one but failed at getting it to POP back into place.
Knobs / sliders are missing on the heater controls.
The carpet is pretty ba, stiff - like its had water sitting.
One of the dash vents is missing.
Missing driver side door handle
Brake pedal is HARD - realized the hose going from vacuum pump to the brake booster is broken.
Mechanically:
1.6 diesel engine - new head gaske, timing belt recently ( probably has less than 100 miles on it )
The 5 speed shift linkage is not right - it really likes to go into reverse - the shifter is angled - finding first is hard.
On a quick test drive up and down road - i was unable to find 5th gear - its linkage related - looking at it from above everything looks ok.
At idle the engine / car shakes violently. I noticed a poly front motor mount ? But when driving / getting into the throttle that vibration goes away.
I am not sure if it crappy battery or something but when sitting awhile unused the battery goes dead and have to charge it / jump it.
The glow plugs dont come on automatically.
History:
This car had been sitting a long time over in Iowa at an Independent VW Repair shop since late 90's. It was sold to a local enthusiast that replaced the head gasket / timing belt. But he never registered it or drove it - just sat in his driveway. I picked it up from him a few weeks ago with possible intentions of doing a later TDI Engine swap. Last week i picked up another Mk1 Turbo Diesel last week so listing this car for sale.
