1985 Volkswagen Vanagon Bus MT Wasserboxer Type L 7-Seat 4-Spd 4 Cyl A/C Blue
1985 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Description
Hi & Thank You for checking out this listing.
This is a 1985 Volkswagen (VW) Vanagon (Van) Type L 7-seat 4-speed manual transmission that was purchased by my father in June '89. He was the 2nd owner for this VW Van. The original owner sold this to my dad with 61,065 miles on it. As best as I can figure out, from tags & discussion - this Van was a daily driver used until some time in the year 1999/2000. An issue arose from dropping oil pressure. My dad removed the mustache bar & mounts in an attempt to lower the engine as he wanted to back flush the oil pick up. I don't believe he ever got his hands on the pump he was looking for & after his initial attempt, the engine sat supported on a jack stand and the van remained in the driveway almost exactly as he left it about 20 years ago. The front windshield was smashed by a falling tree limb at some point, so a tarp was placed over the front of the van to help keep the rain out. The odometer reads 98,888 original miles, with original paint & interior.
The mustache bar (which supports the engine and attaches to the frame with 2 plates & 4 screws) was located and attached, but the rubber mounts & the plate (a part that secures the mounts to the engine) has not been located at this time. Absent these parts, a wood frame &some ratcheting tie-downs were used to support the engine (see photo) so the van can be rolled or pulled onto a flatbed. The oil filter was removed in order to attach this temporary support, anda plastic bag was used to partially cover the opening.
This type of engine is water cooled. It is referred to as a 'Wasserboxer' engine.
This Van is NOT the camper (pop-top) version, but the rear bench seat does fold down. And when combined with the factory upholstered cushion (60.5" x 33.5" x 4"), provides a flat surface for napping/sleeping (see photos). When the rear bench seat is folded down (the bottom is pulled forward so the bench seat becomes flat and facing up, see photos), the cushion + folded out rear chair creates a space of about 61" (side to side) x 74" (front to back). The two middle bench seats also fold forward about half way (so not flat), extending the sleeping surface area from 74" to 93" (but only for 2/3 of the width, or 40" side to side). This feature was also useful for increasing the cargo room of the Van for large objects without having to remove the middle bench seat.
This Van has the optional Air Conditioning upgrade installed. The current condition is unknown, but was inworking condition when the Van was in running condition 19+ years ago. The 1st owner did make a modification by tapping into the duct and rigging a new vent to blow directly down on the driver (see photos).
A total of 4 keys are included with this Van: (1)opens the gas cap, (1) opens the glove box, (1) operates the ignition, the two front doors & the sliding door, and (1) operates the lock on the tailgate.
The tires deflated atsome point over the past 20 years. The rubber is severely cracked in multiple places. The tires have not been tested & it isunsure if they can be inflated or if they will even hold air.
The battery was removed at some point. A battery is NOT included with this auction.
The area around the rear bumper (on the drivers side) and the post that extends into the rear bumper are both pushed in (see photos) possibly from some type of impact. The rear bumper itself is missing and is NOT included with this auction.
The front right turn signal was removed, but it was located & is included with this auction.
The driver side rear speaker (wires danging in the picture) possibly broken off at some point, was located & is included with this auction.
The front air duct cover that sits in the middle below the dashboard was removed, but it was located & is include with this auction. If screws are needed, those were not located.
The radio was not tested and may or may not function.A CB radio, located in the driver side door (see photos), was frequently used by my father. The CB radio was not tested and may or may not function, but will remain as currently installed and is included with this auction. The radio is a Realistic (Radio Shack brand) & the antenna is a K40 (a Very popular model at the time) which includes the base with a magnetic mount.
The glass insert on the passenger side rear view mirroris missing.
Thewindshield wiper wiper assembly on thepassenger is either broken or missing a screw, so thewindshield wiper spins completely around.
The windows are functional, and either roll down, unhinge, or slide open. But the tracks on the passenger sliding windows need to be cleaned out.
The seat belts are present, but some of the plastic assembly covers are either cracked, have fallen off, or are missing.
The pistons that assist in opening and maintaining the tailgate, are shot. The tailgate opens but needs to be propped open (see photos).
Most likely a result of the broken windshield, the headliner has visible mildew spots and the Van has a mildew smell as well.
A tarp was used to cover the front of the van, to minimize rain entry. The tarp did have some residual paint on it from being used and that has transferred to the outside of the bus. When I washed the Van for pictures, I was able to remove the paint in areas using soap & water but there are still many spots (see photos) that will need time & more effort to remove. My dad was a mechanic & he had no problems maintaining this vehicle up until the oil pressure issue. As aVolkswagen enthusiast my dad owned many different models over the decades, including 3 different vans that he enjoyed driving. Not only did he appreciate the quality & craftsmanshipof this German manufacturer, but the relative ease of securing & replacing parts. My dad was also a firm believer in Amsoil brand products. This Van was convertedto full synthetic oil just after his purchase.
For someone knowledgeable about VW Vanagons, salvaging this vehicle for parts could definitely be worth your time (this is the seller's OPINION only).
