The Good;
84’ Vanagon Westfalia Wolfsburg Edition. Stock 1.9L Fuel Injected Wasserboxer with an Automatic Transmission. Camper has been restored to a very usable and dependable condition. New replacements include; fuel injectors, water pump, radiator/fan, heater cores, blower motor, ignition/neutral safety switches, front and rear brakes, steering u-and rag joints, windshield, front and rear glass seals, batteries, tires (about a year-ish old) and recent tune up and lof.. On the camper-side an alarm, decent Pioneer stereo, Go Westy aux. battery kit, and new canvas have been installed. The original carpeting, curtains*, cushions, windows, doors, and cabinets are all in nice working “as designed condition” (the bamboo floor does shows wear, *rear hatch curtains are new). The sink, stove, lights, gauges all work fine and the fridge works good on AC (120-volt), fair on DC (12-volt).
The Bad;
The dash had its typical 30+year old electrical gremlins so the Wolfsburg Tack was replaced with the analog clock about 6-months ago (at which time the odometer quit working). The wipers do not park nor have the intermittentsetting, the fridge is "inop" on the gas setting and the AC was removed to free up some more storage (all of parts have been maintained for reinstall if desired)
And the Ugly;
All typical rust and daily driver dents have been repaired (repaired correctly I will add) and the original Wolfsburg Edition Colors have been maintained (Toscana Beige on top and Merian Brown on bottom). However, The Beige has two off-shade rattle can spots (see pictures of Refrigerator Vent and Rear Hatch) and the Brown was well basically Terribly-Applied, suffering from orange peel and lite spots. Assuming it wont be entered in the Pebble Beach Concours D'eleganceanytime soon it looks presentable from 30-feet or so. I tried to capture its imperfections on a few photos (see right rear corner and Wolfsburg badge)
The Caveat; This Rig is a blast to drive and I enjoy making friends wherever I go, all of the typical age-related repairs and replacements have been made and its currently being used as a daily driver and occasionalweekend warrior. It starts in the cold or the hot without hesitation, it tracks and steers very stable and stops without fear. It doesn’t have any strange smells, leaks, noises or driving quirks and should give years of future service. With that said; It is a textbook example of a German Engineered vehicle (everything is simple and makes sense) however it is 35-year-old technology and performs and requires maintenanceas such.
