1963 Volkswagen Beetle - Classic Description

NO RESERVE Vintage Illusion Sky Cruiser prototype.

I built this car between 1985 and 1989. It is simply a modified VW sedan with no mechanical changes from stock, but obviously some major appearance mods. All modified body parts were designed and built by me – I take all the blame. The car is a 1963 beetle with 48,000 actual miles on it. 5,000 of those miles were put on the car after the mods.

It is a 3 Window coupe. While it is now a 2-seater, there is ample room for luggage in the finished area behind the front seats for your bags in addition to the area in the front trunk.

I have always kept it indoors and clean, and even though I finished it 27 years ago, it has passed the test of time quite well. I hardly drive it at all anymore and it is a shame to let it sit.

It has a very nice shortened sun roof from a stock VW and air flow to the engine from both the side louvers and the gap beneath the artificial continental spare give it plenty of oxygen. Seats are from a Chrysler Cordoba (rich, Corynthian leather!?!) – yes, they fit, and are VERY comfortable.

Every time you stop, someone will come up, walk around the car and ask “what kind of car IS this?” It gets about as much attention as you can get with a weird old car.

It runs fine but it slips out of 4th gear. For the past 30 years I’ve just been using a stick wedged against the dash to hold it in place. A few years ago I had the whole front end rebuilt and it has very few miles on it since then. The headlights are a bit dim. I think I used too light of wire and/or not grounded them well enough.

I will include a parts car that has a fully functioning gear box. I was going to build a convertible version of this car and got started, only to have to let it sit after my business took off in the early 90s and this is that parts car. It is a 1961 model. All mechanicals are intact and the rear end fiberglass mods and a set of Mustang seats go with it.

I encourage you to personally inspect the car before purchase. I am only 15 miles from Colorado Springs and there are lots of flights in and out of here.

Of course there are no warranties expressed or implied, and I reserve the right to end the auction at any time for any reason.
