1987 Volvo 240 GL Description

You are looking at a rare luxury sedan that has been kept and maintained. Good looking exterior painted in gold with tan interior. Not perfect though, has clear coat issues on hood, trunk & roof (see photos). All around pretty goo for a 30 year old car. Runs well, starts right up, New tires, nice wheels, after market Kenwood AM/FM CD unit w remote control. Nice sunroof. A/C. All P/W work as they should as does pretty much everything else

This car is equipped with a very strong 2.3 Liter engine! The engine sounds, runs and feels smooth and provides good power. Excellent gas mileage. Thetransmission works perfectly. The interior is in good condition except for the two front seat which have seat covers on them.

There is no rust that I can see or minimal rust. Please refer to the pictures below to judge for yourself.

The trunk has a good amount of cargo capacity. Remember, this is not a new car, its a 1987. Almost 30 years old. But still pretty nice. Qualifies for antique plates.

This Volvo (Like most other Volvos) rates very high in safety, it's not a light car, and has a lot of specially engineered alloys along its frame to dampen any possible impact. See:Kelley Blue Book PrinterPrint this page

"This was by far the best car I ever owned. It was so safe, great handling and wonderful to drive. It had sensible creature comforts in it. It was very dependable with low maintenance. Handling was the best I ever experienced. The car saved my life in a crash one month ago and sadly it was totaled. It acted like a tank with the impact. I am looking to replace it with another just like it."

"I purchased this car just before our first child was born back in 1989. She eventually drove it from the time when she obtained a driver's license until she entered college as a freshman. 227000 safe, reliable and low cost miles. Just oil changes at 4000 intervals, occasional spark plug and cap changes and timing belt changes - that's it.

This car lasted 19 years and is still going! Slow, plodding, accurate steering, comfortable. It is a shame that they just don't make these anymore.

The best car I ever owed. We'll miss Squeakers! (named for a squeaking part that was fixed in the first 3 three months)"

"I am the original owner of a 240 wagon bought new in March 1994. I have over 300,000 miles on on the car. The engine and transmission have never been apart. I recently drove it from St. Louis to Dallas, TX, then to Columbia SC. and back. It is still the most comfortable and reliable car I have ever owned."

Approximate mileage:150000

What's great about this vehicle?:Reliable, indestructible, simple, durable, SAFE

What's not so great about this vehicle?:AC never has quite worked well

"I have owned my Volvo now for almost 20 years. Never garaged, its paint job really faded and leaves took their toll in the years when I didn't drive it too much. But when my kids entered their driving years I looked into restoring the paint job. We found a guy who just buffed that paint back to showroom new. Incredible. Newer cars with clearcoat can't come back like that. Other than an AC that has never quite worked, this car is awesome. If I retired today, I would buy and restore 240s. The car is so simple and so reliable. It is a tank that my kids can drive safely. I love it. I won't part with it anytime soon. And the 90s models 90-93 were at the tail end of production so lots and lots of improvements had been made in Sweden to these cars. The 240 wagon is a monument to design simplicity. They should bring them back!"

Ownership Status I own this car.

What's great about this vehicle?:Classic look, fun to drive, cheap to insure

What's not so great about this vehicle?:Lacks power, no cup holders,

"I paid $1000 for my well maintained Volvo 240 DL wagon. I've put nearly 2,000 miles on the wagon since I purchased it. It has been reliable. I repaired a few minor problems--bare wires in the engine compartment--before they became big problems. The engine starts quickly and idles smoothly. The 114 hp engine works hard to pull the 3000 pound plus wagon up hills. I don't mind the lack of power--I'm used to driving 95 hp VW Vanagons.

My wagon is simple. No power windows or door locks. There is plenty of space under the hood to service the vehicle. I bought a kit that relocated the flame trap to the top of the engine. I revere my wagon's simplicity! I love driving my blue brick. The strong steel body conveys a feeling of safety. The doors close with a sold 'thunk.' I love my 240 so much that I plan to buy another. The 240 has all the attributes I like--easy to repair, simple, reliable, well engineered, cheap to operate."

Ownership Status I own this car.

"I bought my 240 GL in 2002. It had 23, 000 miles on it. I have now in excess of 400,000 miles on the car. I have replaced the usual things like struts, shocks, timing belts, brake pads, etc.--just like you would have to on any car. It drives very well, is very solid and I feel extremely safe in it. It is a tank, has a wonderful heater, a sun-roof, power windows, etc. I paid only 1300 for it and it is still rolling along. I do all of my own work on the car and it is quite simple to work on. It ages gracefully as it just looks like a square brick. I have been having some "piston slap" noises for the last 30 thousand miles, but -even with 400k + miles on it--I just have to add about 1/2 quart of oil between oil changes. I drove it 110 mile per hour once when it had 300,000 miles on it. It just keeps on rolling. I finally had a problem with the clear coat on the paint (after 20 years), so I treated her to a new paint job. Still going.... Would recommend this car to anyone and especially to young drivers who want something really safe. Great Car."

"I bought my 240 Sedan in late 2000 and have been driving it ever since. My only real complaint with the car was that shortly after I purchased it, the clear coat covering on the paint started to peel. I don't know where it was parked with the previous owner, and I have always had to park it under the hot Florida sun. I finally got it painted a few months ago, and now it looks as nice as it is in every other aspect! My sister and mother have much newer Volvo models and their regular maitenance costs are much higer than mine since the new cars have so many computer systems. Yes, there are days when I would rather have the zip and luxury of their S60's, but for a 1993, my car drives extremely well. I prefer the ride in it to many of my friends much newer American and Asian-made vehicles. I have driven the car on numerous road trips and it's always reliable. I have about 215,000 miles on it now. I recently inherited some money and considered a new car, but there is really no reason I need one, so I think I will be driving my 240 for many more years to come!"

"...'cause when the sun dies and the earth is a burned-out husk, my Volvo will still be drivable. It's ugly. It's slow. Kelley Blue Book doesn't even evaluate cars this old. But after two serious accidents and a quarter of a million miles, it's got a straight frame, gets 25 miles a gallon on the original engine and transmission, turns on a dime (well, okay, on some kind of large archaic Swedish coin), and has never, never, ever let me down. The Time Machine ain't a Delorean, it's an old blue Volvo sedan. It's a big ugly dog that slobbers, but it will love you forever...and in a pinch it will save your life. In other words, she ain't heavy, she's my Volvo."

"I got my 240 in 2000 when I turned 16. It's the only car I've ever had and I'm almost 24 now. Annie, as I call her, is the most reliable vehicle of any of my friends cars. She doesn't like the Florida heat and when I first got her, she overheated a few times, but as I learned how to handle her I can now prevent that from happening and havent had to be towed since! Even though she's 15 years old, she drives nicer than a lot of my friends much newer vehicles. This is not a "performance" vehicle, but for a little 4-cylinder she gets me where I need to go in the same amount of time it takes anyone else, and safely! I've been in a few fender-benders...but of course, my car was not the one that needed any repairing! Sure I'd like a newer car, but I've grown to really love my Volvo 240 and if you don't have a lot of money to spend on a car, this is definately your best choice! My only complaints would be that the interior parts are cheap plastic and brake easily. The driver seat springs are also broken in my car, and that seems to be a common 240 problem, as I've noticed several people said that. But my vehicle has 200,000+ miles and is still going strong!"
