M44-Powered 1972 BMW 2002 5-Speed
1972 BMW 2002 Malaga Description
This 1972 BMW 2002 is powered by an1.9-literM44 inline-four and a five-speed manual transmission from a 1998 BMW 3-Series.
The engine came from an e36 318ti that wastotaled when it was brand new (rear-end crushed by a truck) so the engine only had ~ 5,000 miles on it. The swap was performed at aBMW Independent shop that specialized in BMW motor swaps for the purpose of increased power & performance. This was not their first swap. The engine/trans & diff were all laser-aligned to make sure it was straight & true. The car is finished in Malaga over a black and grayhigh end German vinyl interior. (built by Aardvark Engineering in SoCal). I acquired the car 17 months ago.
Other modifications include a rear disc brake conversion -Front and rear disc brakes are visible through the spokes of the 15″ Panasport wheels, which are fitted with Westlake Radial RP18 tires measuring 195/50. An aftermarket stereo system with anauxiliary input is installed in the center stack, and Blaupunkt speakers have been added to the door panels and rear parcel shelf.A set of front and rear shock tower barsare fitted underhood and in the trunk, and the latter also serves as a battery and fire extinguisher mount.A contoured MOMO steering wheel with BMW horn button is fitted, and a MOMO shift knob is provided for the five-speed manual transmission. An oil and filter change was performed in July 2019.A set of year-of-manufacture California blue plates are included, and an adapter is provided to preserve the intact past registration sticker. Includes aclean California title in the seller’s name.
The car is equipped with slim bumpers with factory overriders. Factory US-market lighting with amber front and red rear side markers has been retained. Note: the front bumper is drilled for a license plate larger than the standard US plate size, and a dent is pictured at the passenger side of the front bumper. A bracket can easily overcome the front plate issue.
The cabin is upholstered in black and gray, with front E21 sport seats and a factory rear bench with blackhigh end German vinylouter surfaces and gray inner surfaces. Note: The carpets have separated from the driver’s inner kick panel, and there is some wear on the driver’s seat. The handbrake is not functional due to the rear disc brake conversion. There is a crack on the center of the dashboard.
I can provide more pictures on request.
