If you prefer a big car with a torque-heavy motor, this might be the car for you. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this 1969 Impala Custom Hardtop Sports Coupe. Built at General Motors’ Arlington, Texas factory during the first week of December 1968, this car went on to live most of its life in the Lone Star State. It was originally sold new by Steakley Chevy in nearby Dallas. This was a custom order car that really is opted in a very desirable way such as a 396ci V8 2BC, 12 bolt rear end, TH400 automatic with horseshoe floor shifter, factory console tachometer, power steering, power brakes and very rare headrest bucket seats!

Finished in Lime Frost (code 59), this car’s paint and trim are in overall amazingly original condition and the car has a certain charm with the original patina it possesses. In addition, there is a full original Dark Green vinyl top (code S) that is in very good overall condition. Some people might suggest the car should be repainted while others might say it should be left alone. Once you buy the car, the decision will be yours. The car’s Soft-Ray tinted glass panels are in overall great shape while its lights, bodywork and battery are in better-than-average order. The trunk is solid and has a full-sized spare tire/wheel and jacking equipment. The car’s engine bay is tidy while the integrated bumpers are in very good order.

This big Chevy rolls on blackwall radials, size 225/70R15 at all four corners. Each tire surrounds factory Rally or “turbine” wheels with beauty rings. The wheels and tires are in satisfactory order.

Under that big hood is the numbers matching 396 CID Turbo-Jet V-8 engine with a two-barrel carburetor and breathing through dual exhausts that came from GM’s Tonawanda, New York engine factory. While it made decent power, its big advantage lies in the gobs of torque it generates. It makes for a very smooth power delivery to match the car’s unruffled ride. Buttoned to this engine is a Turbo Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission and a 12-bolt differential. Driver convenience options include power steering, power brakes and tinted glass. Recent work includes a refreshed four-core radiator, brake work, new control arm bushings, strut rod bushings, sway bar links and shock absorbers along with a major tune-up and a modern high-energy ignition system distributor installed.

Inside, the car’s Parchment interior (code 859) is overall satisfactory order. This model is somewhat rare in that unlike most of its Impala brethren, it has a pair of front headrest bucket seats and a center console with an “aircraft” or “horseshoe” shift lever. Most Impalas came with a bench seat up front. The front seats show some blemishes, notably on the bottom cushions. The contrasting black carpet and black headliner are in decent order. The original two-spoke steering wheel with its wood hub insert is present and looks great, the instrument panel, with its dominant ribbon-style speedometer, is in very good order while the inner door panels, center console and shift are in satisfactory shape. The car’s tachometer is another rarity. Rounding out the interior is a factory Delco AM radio.

The 1969 Impala and other full-sized Chevrolets got new slab-sided bodies with a small “upsweep” at the rear quarter window, giving them a more formal appearance. It retained the 119-inch wheelbase from previous models. New front bumpers that wrapped around the grille and horizontal taillights were in the rear bumper. The hardtop Sport Coupe got a new notchback roofline, replacing the “fastback” C-pillar from 1967 to 1968. Ventless front windows were used on all models. Chevrolet had a rudimentary “power vent” system featuring vents in the instrument panel. The ignition switch moved from the instrument panel to the steering column and when the key was removed, the steering wheel and shift lever locked.

The 1969 model year Impala production topped Caprice production by 611,000 units. Impala station wagons were renamed Kingswood, a name which would continue through 1972. The similar 1970 Impala got a minor facelift featuring a more conventional under the grille bumper replacing the wrap-around unit used in 1969 along with new triple vertical taillights in the rear bumper.

The 1965-70 GM B platform was the fourth best-selling automobile platform in history after the Volkswagen Beetle, Ford Model T and the Lada Riva. Documentation includes the original owner’s manual.

Competition to this Impala in 1969 included AMC’s Ambassador SST Coupe, Dodge’s Monaco Coupe, Ford’s Fairlane Hardtop Coupe, Mercury’s Monterey Coupe, Oldsmobile’s Delta 88 Holiday Coupe and Pontiac’s Bonneville Hardtop Coupe.
