1959 Ford Skyliner Retractable Convertible
1959 Ford Galaxie Fairlane 500 Description
This 1959 Skyliner is a true gem. It was purchased in 2016 as a 30th anniversary gift for my husband and I to fulfill a long-time dream. Unfortunately, my husband's current disability has limited our ability to use the car so it is time for it to find a new home. We have put less than 50 miles on the car in the two years we have owned it.
As far as I know, the interior is original except the upholstery which has obviously been re-upholstered at some point. It is likely that the carpet has been replaced as well, as it is in great condition. The radio is missing, but there are two spare radios that come with the car as well as two instrument panels and a new set of dash knobs.
There is a new radiator (2015?) and rebuilt carburetor (2017) under the hood and the 352 engine runs remarkably well considering it has never been rebuilt to my knowledge. There is a video taken 10-20-18 of the engine idling: https://www.facebook.com/2179986935384756/videos/255915085075881/ The gas tank was replaced by the previous owner (2015?). I wouldn't embark on a cross country trip without going through the engine, but it starts and runs great.
The exterior is original, and has obviously been garaged most of it's life. The original fender skirts are with the car (not shown in the photos, but in good shape). There are a few small chips where the paint is damaged and a couple where minor rust has started, but nothing major. As you can see in the photos that were taken 11-20-18 the car is in great original condition. The tires are good, but I don't know how old they are so would recommend replacing before taking a road trip.
The top was working when we purchased the car, but not flawlessly. So, we had a mechanic replace the Deck Lid Jacks and clean and grease the gear boxes throughout the top mechanisms. He tested the motors and relays and they were all working at the time. The car was stored for a few months and when I took photos on 11-20-18 the top would only work partially. So, it is currently back in the shop for some additional tweaking, but I am optimistic that it will be working smoothly again soon. If not, the price already reflects the good, but not restored, condition of the car. I will be willing to negotiate the price slightly if the top is in need of additional work when the car is sold.
There are some extras that come with the car: **New trunk liner (still in the box)** **Three large manuals as shown in the photos** **Planning diagrams/sketches (8 large heavy sheets) signed by Ben Smith who was the Ford engineer who designed the retractable hardtop) and authentication letter (see photos)**
As I said in the intro, this car truly is a gem. We would not be selling it if our circumstances hadn't changed. I don't know a lot about the mechanics of the car, so for that reason I have it consigned to a small car dealer who is also a classic car enthusiast. His name is Steve and his number is 605-892-6929. He has the car in his possession and can answer your questions.
