This 1964 Mercedes Benz 230 SL is a nice example of the breed, with both tops - hardtop and soft top - Power steering, power front disc brakes, fuel injected 6 cylinder overhead cam engine, and 4 speed manual transmission. It's a good driver but not a showcar, and could still be improved as you'll see in the discussion, photos and video below. It's a European delivery car, with the attractive European headlights and the speedometer in Kilometers. . Here it is with the soft top up. It's in good condition, done in the correct stay-fast material, and it opens, latches and closes easily. . The hardtop is in nice shape, and mounts and fits properly. What a pretty car! . And here it is in operation! . Nice! Note the brand new whitewall tires. . The styling on the 230 SL really stands the test of time . Great from any angle. It looks really great in red, too. . Very Pretty . Shiny chrome but not perfect chrome. . The grille has a ding in it. . The upper windshield post chrome needs to be redone. . The historic Mercedes-Benz emblem. . We got this car in Arizona, and it has a clean California title now. The paint is a medium quality job, I think the paint job doesn't look as good as the photos. There are some orangepeel and preparation issues that keep it from being top notch. . Bucket seats, 4 speed manual transmission, and full instrumentation. . The interior is serviceable but older. to be sharp would require the seats & carpeting to be redone. . Nice dash and gauges. the guages work. It shows 71,000 Kilometers, which aren't the original kilometers. According to NMVTIS, it was titled in the state of New Mexico in 1995, and was branded "Not Actual Miles". . Here's the doorpanel. . Original radio, but it doesn't make any noise. The wood trim on the dash is intact but it's weathered. . The inner hardtop is pretty good. . Wear on the bucket seat. . The trunk .. Good solid original sheetmetal trunk pan, I noted some rust repair where it joins the right side wheelhousing. . Nice inner trunk lid . Clean dash. . Fuel injected 6 Cylinder engine - runs great! The car is really fun to drive ! . Engine bay . Stock & Authentic. . It runs nicely, plenty of power. . If I have learned the Mercedes-Benz Hieroglyphics correctly, this engine is a Mercedes-Benz Service replacement engine, and it is a 250 ( ie, a 2500 CC ) engine. That's indicated by the "129" in the top line. It runs very nicely! . Here's a view of the interior with the top down. . the interior . Detail of the top. a bit of wrinkling from being stored in the down position. . Interior top bows are in good shape. . It's a good looking car but not a perfect one. . Here it is underneath. Mostly original sheetmetal but I can tell there has been some rust / rust repair. . I think they could have done a better job on the lower rocker panels ! . Same issues on the passenger side lower rocker. . Looks like a number of the steering components have been replaced with new ones. . There's the engine . Spare tire well looks good & solid. .
