If there's such a thing as an instant classic, the 1953 Packard Caribbean would have a pretty strong claim to the title. With only 750 built, powered by Packard's velvety smooth straight-eight and designed to bring a little pizzazz into the traditionally highly conservative Packard showroom, the Caribbean was a glamorous convertible to rival Cadillac's Eldorado, Buick's Skylark and Oldsmobile's 98 Fiesta.
The Caribbean, inspired by the Pan American show car that Packard unveiled at the 1952 New York Auto Show, was built on the 122-inch wheelbase of the Clipper line. Packard gave the car hand-formed rear quarter panels with fully rounded wheel openings, as well as a continental kit, chrome wire wheel covers, and a higher grade of interior trim than its Clipper counterparts. Optional equipment included Packard's Ultramatic automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes and power windows. All were equipped with a 180hp, 327-cu.in. straight-eight.
Our Caribbean has received a comprehensive restoration back to original condition. The car has outstanding Gulf Green Metallic exterior with an all new Green and white quality leather interior. The look and feel of the leather is first class. Bumpers and all exterior chrome has been triple chrome plated. All five wire wheels have been restored. The car has the correct canvas white soft top and matching white boot. Attention to detail makes this Caribbean an absolute show stopper.
Mechanically, the legendary Flat Head 8 Cylinder engine is very smooth and powerful. The transmission shift assertively and the car rolls down the highway effortlessly. The car handles very well for a land yacht. The power brakes stops the car well All lights and gauges work. The car has a great addition of Air Conditioning. The A/C is very cold and the car still runs the same with it on. All windows work and power top works with original knob. You will be very impressed with this car. This is something you can be proud to take to your next car show. The car was part of a very prominent private collection and is just now being offered to the public.
With only 750 Caribbeans being produced in 1953, not many remain today. Low Production hand built 1950's cars like the Caribbean remain popular among collectors as these unique classics are often referred to "Rolling Art", which makes them timeless!
