One of the best on the planet

Pontiac gear heads will tell you that their beloved company invented the muscle car. It's debatable. But there's little doubt that this is the Pontiac that brought muscle car era version 1.0 to a memorable close.First applied to the 1961 389 at the heart of the drag-race-special Catalinas and Venturas, he Super Duty was instantly legendary. The SD 421 followed later in 1961 and was available over the counter; for '62, t could be factory installed.

So, hen Pontiac created what would ultimately be the top dog of the second-generation F-body equipped with a near-race-spec 455-cu.in. V-8, hey called it Super Duty once again. Available as an option on both Trans Ams and Firebird Formulas for the latter half of 1973 and again for 1974, he SD-455 almost didn't see the light of day as a management change at Pontiac ushered in new bosses who saw little worth in what was then the fading performance-car business. The Sd-455 was a Hail Mary pass of all Hail Mary passes at a time when the federal government, PEC and Big Insurance were bent on sacking the practice of bolting powerful V-8 engines into two-door cars that were festooned with fat stripes, acy badges or cartoon characters. Fortunately for TA enthusiasts and Gear Heads, here were just enough right-thinking people at Pontiac to make it happen.

Real Trans Am SD-455s are rarely spotted on the road today, hich is no shocker considering that only 182 of these were built for the 1973 model year. Of course, ar fewer Super Duty 455-powered Trans Ams survived the ensuing four decades at the hands of enthusiastic owners, ager to test the car's 13-second quarter-mile capability and shockingly good handling. These cars are highly sought after today and difficult to locate with all of their original mechanicals and body panels intact.

The SD-455 was a thinly disguised race engine: four-bolt mains, einforced block, orged pistons, orged connecting rods, itrided crankshaft, ven a provision in the block for a dry sump oiling system. The outside of the Super Duty engine is cleverly disguised to look exactly like a standard Firebird 455 V-8. This means a massive lump of cast iron, ith its water pump the only piece of aluminum in sight. But the source of strength lies not far below its expanse of red paint. The SD-455's cylinder heads were a free-breathing design patterned after the howling Ram Air IV heads, nd the cam was similar to the grind used in the Ram Air IV. But since leaded gas was out and stricter emissions laws were in, he SD-455 made do with 8.25:1 compression and .470-inch lift, ersus the RA IV's 10.5:1 compression and .520 lift.

This TA is truly one of the last muscle cars ever made. The Super Duty 455 was the result of the accumulation of knowledge gained from years of racing, pplied to the street. Its factory Horse power made it the fastest muscle car of its time, n instant legend, nd one of the most desirable collector cars today.
