1960 Triumph TR3 Description

1960 Triumph TR3A (registered as a 1961).

I purchased this car almost 2 years ago from a gentleman in Lyons, CO. Since then I have put about $15K into it to make it the most reliable TR3 I have had the pleasure of driving.

This is not a garage queen. I’ve put about 8K miles on it in the last 2 years, and that’s with it being in the shop for upgrades a significant amount of the time. It is an older (20 year +) respray, but presents extremely well from 5+ feet. In fact, from that distance it looks perfect. But once you get in you’ll start to notice quite a few imperfections.

There are some chips/scratches/etc around the body that I’ve tried to capture in the photos. The door seals area bit tired, and you’ll find small gaps in the rear weather-stripping. There are tiny bits of overspray here and there. The aftermarket steering wheel necessitated installing a toggle switch for the turn signals (we used a period correct toggle which feels fantastic). The heater has been removed (inop) but is included with the car. The original steering wheel with turn signal assembly is also included. The amp needle recently fell off (go figure) but I’ll have it replaced with an OEM prior to sale. The choke is a bit tough to pull out, but you only have to do it once so I haven’t bothered to address it.

I’ve never even installed the roof/windows, but they will be included. Side skirts are a bit glazed, but functional. Top is in good shape. Frankly, I don’t expect anyone will ever use them, as this car is all about having the wind in your hair 6 inches from the ground.

Please don’t be dismayed by my description, just trying to be as thorough as I can. See photos for full details.

Now to the good bits. It’s had a no expense spared full engine rebuild in the past 12 months. New brakes. New suspension. New Battery. Rats nest removed and replaced with correct Lucas wires. Crane ignition replaced with Petronix version. Steering box rebuilt. And a whole lot more. I can provide details and receipts to any interested party, as well as contact info for my mechanic (Ted Ax of Ax and Allies) who knows this car inside and out.

This car starts the first time every time. It warms up quickly, and never goes over temp. The installed temp-sensing fan works as it should, but it’s really only insurance as the car doesn’t need it. This. Car. Drives. Great. It’s not cosmetically perfect, but every mechanical upgrade that can be done has been done, and it has been the most reliable car I’ve owned after the rebuild. I regularly drive it 300+ miles in a day with no issues (except an immense amount of fun). It handles like a champ (well, like a 1960s champ) and never fails to bring a smile to my face. I’ve also received more compliments in this car than in ones that cost 5 times as much. It’s truly an occasion every time I go for a drive.
